Juve reconsider Rafinha

Juventus claim their transfer campaign is over, but today newspapers suggest Rafinha and Fabio Grosso are back on the agenda.

The Bianconeri have strengthened considerably over the summer with the arrival of Felipe Melo, Diego and Fabio Cannavaro.

Yet friendlies showed some difficulties down the flanks and Jonathan Zebina’s fitness levels are still a mystery.

According to Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, Juve are in talks to bring in a new full-back, preferably a versatile one who could work on either wing.

Lazio’s Lorenzo De Silvestri seems to have moved towards Fiorentina instead, so the prime candidate is Schalke 04 star Rafinha.

In Germany for four years, he has repeatedly rejected the offer of a contract renewal to stay at Schalke, so he would be available for £7m.

There is a hiccup, as Rafinha does not have an EU passport, so the club would need to sell one of their current crop to a side outside of Italy to free up a spot.

The other option is Grosso (pictured), whose future at Olympique Lyonnais is in doubt after repeated links with a return to Italy.

The 2006 World Cup winner is a left-back, so not as versatile as Rafinha, but he certainly brings experience.

It would also enable Juve to play almost the entire first choice defence for the Italy squad ahead of South Africa 2010, reuniting Grosso with Cannavaro and Giorgio Chiellini.

Rafinha is overrated and overvalued and we already have Caceres.
De Silvestri was a far more realistic solution, but it seems that Fiorentina's 2 millions might beat s to him... (yet again)

Since Caceres is rather used as RB, i would prefer to see a LB instead.
However i reckon that we are buying no full-backs, it is too late for that!

After 3 consecutive seasons of repeating the same mistakes.
This year, we had no excuses, we are worthy of our fate! We will pay for the full-back situation! and the fault will be on our shoulders alone...

Maybe he needs to change a team, I really don't remember any Schalke player that flourished in last 2-3 yrs.
True. I'll even give you an example, look at when things weren't going so well for Özil at Schalke he moved to Bremen and now he's a completly different player. So yes, goggo might be right a new change is all he might need.

Well like how Molinaro was regarded as an important talent? He's 26 now, and I personally wouldn't consider him as one of the best left-backs in Europe. Rafinha could blow up at Juve.
I totally agree, but my point is: He is not on that level he could strengthen us. I definately wouldn't rate him higher than (a fit) Zebina. It would take at least two years he could be really 'useful' for us, i guess.

Indeed, that's true. Maybe under Magath he could improve quickly.

That's the whole problem with Zebina though, there is just no way he's going to last a whole season. Zebina's problem is consistency, and when he's not here, it's Grygera who takes his spot. I agree it would be close if you compare the two when both fully fit, but then there's the age issue, with Rafinha being considerably younger with plenty of room to improve and flourish in a big team.

rafinha would be a great player in our ranks. he would strengthen our whole right side of the pitch, regardless of who's playing in the front. but if he were to leave shalke, dont you think clubs like real madrid, chelsea, milan and man utd would also be interested in bringing him to their grass? and frankly, I dont think we could match the offers from chelsea, real madrid and man utd.
i'd say this is nothing but a rumour.

Well, that's the problem really. Zebina can be very good but he's going to miss the game against Chievo from injury again, plus with the new formation width from the fullbacks is quite important. Rafinha is good going forward too.

I agree. zebina tends to get injured pretty often, which does not suit a fullback at this level. i'd say we get rafinha if we can, sell zebina and keep grygera in reserve.

even if rafinha isnt great defending we can afford that in a way.
True dat, and Cáceres can cover too.

Nah, I'd sell Grygera and keep Zebina for Rafinha's competition.

well i think that dc, caceres and johnnie boy will handle this problem. Grygera is a disaster imo. Anyways we have the january window if we want to "repair" something.

Ive only recently been watching Schalke games and I like the way he goes forward, didn't really see anything worrying defensively. Not sure how he'd do here, I heard he can't cross?
