Palladino scoops award

Livorno's Raffaele Palladino has landed the prestigious Premio Piola award.

The prize is handed out each year in recognition of the best Italian Under-21 striker and is awarded by the provincial administrator of Vercelli.

The honour was first introduced in order to remember Silvio Piola - a local hero in the area after representing the Azzurri between the 1930s and 1950s.

Previous winners include Massimo Maccarone, Giuseppe Sculli, Alberto Gilardino and Giampaolo Pazzini.

"I'm really happy for this award," Palladino told skysports.com.

"I'm really emotional. Honestly, when I knew I won this award I didn't believe it - I thought there must have been a mistake - but then I had confirmation and knowing that my name is on this award gives me a lot of satisfaction.

"This season I've been troubled by injury and I hope to be able to play well over the next six months. I have a big desire to do good things.

Raffaele Palladino (Livorno): Raffle winner

After making a big impression in Serie B last season, Raffaele Palladino is proving himself to be a player of top-flight quality. Dave Taylor looks at the Juventus-owned hitman making a name for himself at Livorno

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As several members of Juventus’ highly successful Primavera sides of the last three years are out on loan and looking for a return to become an Old Lady favourite, one man in particular is standing out from the crowd. Raffaele Palladino is currently shining in the Livorno No 20 shirt and he’s found that stepping into the boots of one of Serie A’s most consistent scorers, Igor Protti, hasn’t been quite as tough as expected.

He has quickly gelled with Cristiano Lucarelli - last season’s Capocannoniere - and the pair’s movement and awareness of each other has grown with every match. “Cristiano gives me the very best advice and I always listen to what he has to say,” said the 21-year-old. “I have learned a lot from playing by his side. His controlled aggression and feel for the game have helped me to understand what is expected in Serie A.”

Understanding what Coach Roberto Donadoni wants, Palladino typifies the way Livorno play their football – exciting, entertaining and without fear. His astounding workrate on and off the ball has been perfectly illustrated ever since he scored the winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Lecce on his Serie A debut. Then in Week 5, he displayed his explosive pace and strength when netting in the 2-0 win over Ascoli. Racing past two defenders, he fired an angled drive into the far corner of the net. The stadium erupted. “I’m very shy and was embarrassed by the fans’ reaction, but I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it and I do want more,” he beamed. “I’m pleased with the way I have started with Livorno. When I made my debut it was a brilliant and very emotional for me.”

Born and bred in Naples, he honed his skills in the city’s tough streets, pretending to be his hero – Alessandro Del Piero. “We used to play all day and all night,” he reminisces. “My strength is that I always play as if I was kicking the ball about the streets with my old friends. Thinking like this helps me remain calm. I believe I learned more about football in the street than I would have at a football school. Ball control is everything if you want to stop it going under a car or breaking a window.”

The young carefree Neapolitan was playing as a trequartista for his local side Amici di Mugnano when Benevento picked him up for the 2001-02 season. Being used in central midfield, his skills shone brightly in Serie C1 and attracted interest from Luciano Moggi’s right-hand man Francesco Ceravalo – who promptly signed him for Juventus in 2002. The eager youngster soon became a leading light in the Bianconeri’s Primavera side over the next two seasons and helped them win the prestigious Viareggio youth tournament in 2004 and the Italian Cup, impressing everyone with his attitude and scoring ability.

Last season he was sent out on loan to Serie B outfit Salernitana, grabbing a respectable 15 goals in 39 games. In a League where technique counts for little and character everything, he showed he could maintain the pace with the best. This season in Serie A, Palladino has had the stage to display both his personality and quality. Donadoni claims it is a standard of football he has easily adapted to and that the boy is definitely one for the future.

“Raffaele is very young, still just 21 and to put too much pressure on him is wrong,” said the Milan legend. “At his age there are going to be times when he won’t be riding on the top of the wave. However, he showed last year his strengths and he undoubtedly has a lot of potential. His movement and spirit are indisputable. There are certain differences between Serie A and B, but his impact has been positive and he has continued from where he left off last term. He is now playing with footballers who have reached a higher level in their careers than the ones he played with and against in the past. This will help him.”

It certainly has, with Italy Under-21 Coach Claudio Gentile rewarding him with his second cap in the crucial European Championship qualifier against Belarus in September. Although only a substitute, Gentile was so impressed that he started Palladino in the next game against Slovenia and the youngster’s early goal proved enough to give Italy the win.

Four days later, Palladino once again scored the decisive strike in the 1-0 victory over Moldova. “I knew these matches would help me prove my worth to Gentile,” he said. “I have been in a couple of squads, but was not given an opportunity to show what I could really do. However, I feel my goals were crucial this time round and I hope I have done enough to repay the faith of the Coach,” he said.

Although he still dreams of playing for Juventus one day, the youngster is far from unhappy in Tuscany. “I am only thinking of Livorno this term and I am proud to put on the Amaranto shirt,” he explains. “I have the trust of everyone here and I could not possibly wish for more. Of course I want to play for Juve, but perhaps it is four or five years away. There are some real superstars ahead of me – they are phenomenal. I am just a young player who wants to show my true value and what I can give my team.”

Today there was also a nice interview on Tuttosport. Unfortunately I don't have time at the moment to translate it.

LA STELLINA DEL LIVORNO VUOLE TORNARE IN BIANCONERO
Palladino sogna: «Io con Ibra alla Juve»

NOSTRO INVIATO
FABIO RIVA

VERCELLI. « Quasi non ci credevo - confessa Raffaele Palladino, appena eletto miglior attaccante italiano Under 21 -.

« Anche lui napoletano, come me. Andavamo a cena, mi dava consigli.

Under 21, appunto: altro tema piacevolmente scottante.

His name has been thrown around for a couple years now as a potential successor to Del Piero along with the likes of Davide Chiumento, Guiseppe Sculli, Fabrizio Miccoli and even Benjamin Onwuachi and Rey Volpato. Given the experiences of Miccoli and Sculli I think I can safely say its going to take a great deal to convince Moggi to give him a shot at the first team jersey; with that in mind maybe sending him to Livorno (where Cristiano Lucarelli is undoubtedly their number one striker) may not have been all that prudent.
