... HSV.

A dark day for Dutch football. The European talent of the year 2003 goes off to a German mid-table team :(

I was, and still am a very big fan of Van der Vaart. He's got great vision, technique and also has an eye for goal. His progress was hindered by Koeman, who never gave him the same position twice. I think VDV is best as a #10, the free-role behind the strikers. NOT at left midfielder as which he has been used most. Besides that there was a lot of focus on his private life, especially his relation with the country's uber-*****.

I hope Rafael can overcome this setback and regain his status the following years.

Not really surprised, van der Vaart is one of the most overrated players in the modern game. Every single time I see this guy play he disapoints me and really never lives up to his plaudits. Same thing with Andy van der Meyde.

From being "touted" by Man United to playing for HSV. Wow.

didn't he have some beef with ibra while in ajax? i doubt if they ever would get along, so good riddance. and by the way, last season showed we can't relay on neddy the whole season as he himself admits it.

 What a story...

Zlatan and VDV are the two hottest talents at Ajax. They both look likely to get sold, but VDV is Dutch and arguably 'more important' to the club, so Zlatan leaves to Juventus and VDV goes to HSV

Simple, Koeman ****ed up and played him on the left-wing, killing his reputation...
No no no!

Koeman played him in like five different positions, he does that with all players, that's why Sneijder, Heitinga and De Jong all had dips in form. Koeman is a great tactician, but he's crap with young players.

Ajax always plays a flat 4-3-3, that's the club's tradition. VDV plated most of 2001-2003 behind the striker as Mido was absent and Ibrahimovic injured or out of form. However, he started off as a left winger and he thinks he's equally good at both.

But VDV is slow, can't cross and most importanly doesn't defend. So when he got back to left midfielder (not left winger) he got a lot of critisism about his condition and defensive skills. But VDV isn't a player who defends, and by playing him there you don't use his qualities. It's like using Gatusso as a striker.

And the reason he wanted to leave instead of waiting for a bigger club is the constant focus of his private life (partly his own fault, his wedding will be on luve television for god's sake). The opposing fans often had banners saying his girlfriend is Amsterdam's #1 whore. I don't think that's a nice thing to hear.
