Blog: Bye bye Rafa
Rafael Benitez will not leave Liverpool to join Italian giants Juventus this summer, says Serafino Ingardia
Once so close, Rafa Benitez and Juventus now find themselves as far from each other as they could ever be. The Spanish boss has reiterated his desire to stay at Anfield but whether Liverpool will allow him to keep his job is yet to be seen.
The saga which involved him and Juventus was indeed a long and time wasting one. And as we all thought it was only a matter of time before the deal was confirmed, negotiations seem to have now taken a U-turn. That was to be expected though from a manager who has played that trick before.
Compensation or not, as things stand the former Valencia boss will not move to Juventus simply because he does not want to or, as they say in Liverpool, because of his incredible commitment to the Reds' cause. A commitment which however he appeared to lack when he allegedly decided to discuss terms with Roberto Bettega or flirted with his beloved Real Madrid.
The Bianconeri did all they could to get their hands on him and cannot be blamed for a situation which from different sides can be seen as ridiculous.
Indeed, it seems pretty fair to say that they were used and put on hold as Rafa Benitez tried to get in a stronger position at Liverpool. Now though that his future in England is also compromised, he could remain unemployed for a while. His family never wished to leave Merseyside, still Rafa and his agent superbly persuaded the Press and the parties involved that his interest to move was real.
Juve finally got the bigger picture and during a board meeting held yesterday have opted to look elsewhere. Beppe Marotta will become the new director general come the end of the season and he will no doubt have better ideas in mind.
The likes of Gigi Del Neri and Massimiliano Allegri may not appeal to the fans, but let us not forget that Cesare Prandelli and Luciano Spalletti are valid outsiders capable of the job too.
Would Juve then be regretting their wasted chance to sign a so-called world-class manager such as Rafa who arguably failed in his spell at LFC? Only time will tell but for now we can focus on a few other aspects.
Liverpool finished seventh this season like Alberto Zaccheroni's Juventus did. Under Benitez, the Reds were never capable of challenging for the title. Over two seasons, from 2004 to 2006, Jose Mourinho's Chelsea built over Rafa's team a gap of 46 points. Not to mention infamous results in recent campaigns.
Benitez and his incredibly extended Spanish staff are also known to be far from talented in the transfer market as signings over the years have clearly underlined. In the meantime, according to reports, his relationship with certain parts of the dressing room is not great.
Of course Champions League success must be taken into account, but the credit which goes to the manager must also be weighted in the contest of a clear English dominance in the European scenario.
Also consider the money Juventus would have had to pay to land him and you may find that the Bianconeri will be much better off without the Rafalution they were hoping for.

I agree with most of this except that the only valid replacement mentioned is Cesare Prandelli.
However, If we end up with Del Neri, Allegri or Spalletti, then not paying a compensation to get Benetiz would be a big mistake.
