FYI, for those interested... Calcio 2000 often asks random questions of football greats from time to time -- sometimes asking completely off-the-wall questions (such as, "Sea or Mountains?").

This month they featured a Q&A session with Vieira. Below with my translations (thanks for any corrections ;)).

Patrick Vieira - Batti e Ribatti (harping on the guy...)

Q: Se tu fossi un animale? (What animal would you be?)
A: Leopardo (A leopard)

Q: Il piatto preferito? (What's your favorite dish or meal?)
A: Una specialita di Dakar, riso con il pesce (A Dakar [his birthplace in Senegal] specialty: rice with fish)

Q: Il colore? (Favorite color?)
A: Blu

Q: L'attrice (Favorite actress?)
A: Michelle Pfeiffer

Q: L'attore (Favorite actor?)
A: Denzel Washington

Q: Canti sotta la doccia? (Do you sing in the shower?)
A: No, mai. Sono stonato come una campana. (No, never. I sing atrociously. [Literally from Italian: 'I sound like a bell.'])

Q: La musica preferita? (Favorite music?)
A: Quella americana (American stuff)

Q: Il libro? (Favorite book?)
A: Non e' l'ultimo, ma mi ha colpo molto. La biografia di Nelson Mandela. (I don't have a favorite, but I have been struck by many. Like the biography of Nelson Mandela.)

Q: Quando smetterai cosa farai? (What will you do when you stop playing?)
A: Sono ancora giovane per pensarci. (I am too young to think about it.)

Q: Senza il calcio Vieira sarebbe... (Without football, you would be...?)
A: Sarei nel mondo dello sport. Probabilmente professore di educazione fisica. (I would be in the sporting world. Probably a physical education teacher.)

Q: Ti reputi fortunato? (Do you consider yourself fortunate?)
A: Sicuramente. (Certainly)

Q: La droga... (Drugs...)
A: e' male, uccide (They're bad. They kill.)

Q: Il doping... (Doping...)
A: e' imbrogliare, e' brutto per lo sport (It confuses things. It's terrible for the sport.)

Q: Il calciatore preferito (Favorite player?)
A: Frank Rijkaard, ma anche Luis Fernandez (...but also...)

Q: L'allenatore preferito (Favorite coach?)
A: senze esitare Arsene Wenger (without hesitation...)

Q: La partita piu bella (Most beautiful game?)
A: Francia-Spagna dell'Europeo 2000 (France-Spain in Euro 2000)

Q: Il miglior ricordo calcistico (Best memory as a player?)
A: Anche qui senza esitare la Coppa del Mondo del 1998 (Also without hesitation, WC 1998)

Good question. This may have been translated by someone from French into Italian for the magazine.

..and then you translated it into english. A true "Lost in Translation" situation here.

No worries. My Italian teacher is out in Italy right now, so there's no homework. This gave me something to work on in the meantime.

If it wasn't for Italian soccer magazines and RAI International, my memory of the Italian language would decay a lot faster. :D

    cool, thanx for sharing.

    btw, does he know italian?
he was in Milan before going to Arsenal, right?

and when you speak french, Italian comes pretty fast. I'm sure he knows basic Italian.

I would think so. But what tipped me off was when he supposedly replied, "Sono stonato come una campana." That's not the sort of thing that translates directly, and it isn't the sort of answer you'd give unless you've been asked the question before in Italian -- which I kind of doubt.

I had to look it up in my not-very-concise Oxford-Paravia Italian-English dictionary. If he did say that in Italian, I am seriously impressed by the guy's language skills as much as his midfield ball skills. :D
