This evening will see Juventus and Roma battle it out in what promises to be a fascinating Primavera Coppa Italia first leg final. Both sides have won the cup three times each, while the Bianconeri have only ever clinched the trophy away from home.

Juventus' victories have all come in the last twenty years. The first arrived in 1995 when Antonello Cuccureddu’s defending league champions took on Bari. Corrado ‘Ciccio’ Grabbi and Enrico Fatini formed the young strike partnership, with the latter finding the target in both home and away legs. The 2-0 aggregate victory saw the Bianconeri celebrate a Primavera Coppa Italia success for the first time in the club’s history.

A nine-year barren spell then followed before Juve lifted the trophy again. Yet it was worth the wait, above all for the manner in which the triumph arrived. Vincenzo Chiarenza was in his first season in charge of the young Bianconeri and had already led his side to a victorious Viareggio campaign. Their final showdown with Inter didn’t get off to a strong start, however, as the Nerazzurri ran out 2-0 winners in Vinovo.

But the second leg, played in Milan on 7 April 2004, was destined to go down in history. That particular year saw a wealth of young talent emerge through the ranks, which included the likes of Mirante, Konko, Andrea Masiello, Luci, Chiumiento, Bentivoglio and Palladino. The latter broke the deadlock after 10 minutes and Konko brought the visitors level at the start of the second half. Palladino then converted from the spot in extra-time to complete a resounding comeback.

History repeated itself in 2007, as Juventus and Inter again locked horns in the final. The teams had met just a few months previously in the Italian Super Cup final, with De Ceglie’s hat-trick overcoming the Nerazzurri in a 5-0 win. Chiarezza’s side dominated the first leg in Vinovo and were home and dry inside the opening fifteen minutes courtesy of Giovinco and De Ceglie. The return leg saw Lanzafame on target in a 1-1 draw against a team featuring the talents of Bonucci, Andreolli, Bolzoni, Biabiany and Mario Balotelli.
