On the 52nd anniversary of their first Viareggio Cup triumph, the Primavera square up against Avellino. After a 4-2 victory over Maribor, Marco Baroni’s side now have a chance to book a spot in the quarter finals with a win today against their fellow countrymen.
The second round of games begins today at 3pm at Saranza (La Spezia), where last year, the Bianconeri recorded a victory against Vicenza in the last eight.
It’s likely that Baroni will shuffle his pack and utilise his squad depth for this afternoon’s encounter. The tournament is long and the games come thick and fast so the coach may look to rotate as the competition progresses. However, Penna will definitely miss out due to injury and Padovan is in doubt after leaving the field of play early on in the first match.
Today’s tie will be the first time the two clubs have ever locked horns. Avellino have not featured in the competition for seven years, and are without a win in their last five games. The Lupi opened the tournament with a 2-2 draw against A.P.I.A Leichhardt and their last Viareggio Cup success came in 1992 against Nottingham Forest.
It’s a very different story for Juventus, who have been ever present contenders in recent years. Monday afternoon’s 4-2 win over Maribor continued the 27 game goalscoring run, in which the Primavera have netted a total of 68 goals (2.5 per game).
13 February has previously brought good fortune for the Primavera in the Viareggio Cup, yielding five wins and three draws from the eight matches played on this date. This includes the unforgettable 2-0 victory over Vicenza to record the Bianconeri’s first tournament win in 1961.
