In fact why FCUM? Why not AFC Manchester?
There was a vote on the name of the club, and thats is the one that won, personally I voted for '1878 Manchester United FC'

FC United of Manchester - the club formed by disgruntled Manchester United supporters - will play in the North West Counties League.

The embryonic club have been given a spot in the Second Division of the league for the 2005/06 campaign following their recent formation, although they missed the deadline for entry into the FA Cup.

Supporters of The Red Devils created FC United of Manchester in protest at Malcolm Glazer's recent Old Trafford takeover.

Around 3,000 United fans have backed the newly-founded club, who are likely to play their home games at Droylsden next season.

Droylsden's Butcher's Arms ground boasts a 3,000 capacity and FC United of Manchester could conceivably fill the venue given their fledgling support.

A final decision on whether FC United of Manchester can play at Droylsden will be made by Tameside Council shortly, although the club do have a back-up option.

FC United of Manchester are tipped to play their first game - a friendly - in mid-July before the start of the North West Counties League season on August 13.

WOW I think that is bold! but its hard to see FCUM a replacement for manu anytime soon!

It would take at least 11 years or something like that, or being promoted constantly for that to happen :D

AFC Wimbledon, who would have a smaller fanbase, are flying up the leagues. They double their opponents' average season attendances when they play away, and last season (or the year before) had their reserve goalkeeper loaned out to a team two divisions above them. They've been promoted every year so far. At this rate, they'll overtake MK Dons in about five years.

I imagine that's the model they're heading for. We'll have to see if they get the necessary support.

That is what is going to happen, 10k have already pledge money to the club to help. The ground that is too be comfired has been chosen, it has a gate of 3500, in a league of attendancies like in the hundrends at most.

I was merely saying, to 'catch' Man Utd, we'd have to get promoted alot.

FC United in Leigh RMI merger talks

LEIGH RMI sensationally offered to merge with the recently formed FC United of Manchester - the club formed as a protest to Malcolm Glazer's takeover of Manchester United.

The parties decided against becoming one club after talks but they have formed a close relationship.

RMI officials have helped FC United of Manchester get started with a great deal of advice and, in return, the club run by disillusioned Manchester United fans is going to help swell RMI's coffers with a pre-season match.

FC United of Manchester look set to start life at the foot of the pyramid, in North West Counties Division Two.

But a merger with Leigh would have pushed them up to Conference North and solved a lot of the financial problems that, in part, led to RMI's relegation last season.

"It seems that FC United are looking to stage their matches at Droylsden," said Chairman of RMI Supporters' Club Peter Lowe, who was central to the negotiations.

"It would seem hypocritical to some degree, in light of the Glazer events, if a team came into being by taking over another club.

"But they have promised to assist us in our quest for survival as a reward for the amount of help we have given over the last few weeks."

Part of that reward is the arrangement of a friendly match on July 16, which will be the first game in the history of FC United of Manchester, who have appointed Karl Marginson as manager.

The Hilton Park game is expected to attract a crowd well into four figures, which would give a huge boost to Leigh's coffers ahead of the new season.

"They see it as the dawn of the new Newton Heath", continued Peter Lowe.

"It could also help us to show people what Leigh RMI are all about as well."

If FC United of Manchester hit a hitch in their proposed groundshare with Droylsden at The Butchers Arms, RMI have offered a long-term share with the rookies at Hilton Park.
