Since the Portuguese Superliga is about the only other league I watch besides Serie A...

An interesting match-up this weekend, as league leaders FC Porto head to Lisbon to face Sporting tomorrow (Sat, Apr 8). In the Superliga standings, Porto leads second place Sporting by only two points with just five matches left in the season. It's a pretty big game.

Sporting's Liedson, the Superliga's leading scorer last season, always seems to come through with big-time clutch goals. But Porto's Ricardo Quaresma has been on fire this season (we really should sign that boy if we weren't so likely to turn him into mush).

Should be an entertaining match. Bet on...

What a completely brutal game. Both squads were playing each other tough as nails, marking closely, and challenging everything, and sliding into tackles with abandon. There were 10 yellow cards in just the first 65 minutes. The match ended with 12 yellow cards (though two were technically second yellows -- as a red on each side). Ouch. :eyepatch:

It looked like a deadlock. Not a lot of good chances on either side before someone got hacked down. Ricardo Quaresma got subbed at 55', bewilderingly, as he's a critical player and was having a decent game (and a huge one at that). But he was a foul magnet and was getting too caught in the tumble of things -- I think Porto was worried he'd double yellow. Liedson couldn't do much in return, but he at least stayed clean most of the match.

In the end, Sporting Lisbon's 10-game winning streak went down in flames at the 84th minute. A little bit of nifty passing on the run, a failed offsides trap, and some chaos just outside Sporting's penalty box led to an exchange between Adriano and Jorginho, who barely caught the upper near corner with a shot from 12 meters out ... and caught the post's deflection in for his first goal. He was commensurately mobbed in the corner by every Porto player on the bench and it took minutes to pull everybody off.

    Crazy, man. Just crazy.
