Those who posted in this thread with the "who cares" attitude keep returning here because of the supposed "abuse" they have received. This abuse, in Montero's opinion, was my statement that their opinion on the matter is worthless because they said it themselves: they did not care about the Pope and consider him no more than "another bloke," as naive as it sounds (excuse me, it is).
Personally, I'm not offended that people really don't care about the guy. That's their fine opinion (as if anyone asked them their opinion in the first place is another question), and I don't see that as reason to receive alleged "abuse".

But to Andy's naive point, I have to concur wholeheartedly. The guy had done a lot that irritated me and completely pissed me off. But at the end of the day, I can't think of a bigger figure for peace, for making appeals for inter-religious tolerance and understanding, etc., of the latter half of the 20th century. And as much as the Reagan-worshippers wanted to credit Ronnie for the fall of communism and the Berlin Wall in Europe, I would give the most credit to people who worked from the "inside": John Paul II, followed by Gorbachev. (They still have strong theories out there that John Paul II took an assassin's bullet over his non-violent activism that lead to the downfall of Eastern European communism.)

And for that, I don't think anyone can rationally say he was just another bloke in society without questioning their own motivations for saying that. Sounds like there's a whole other personal agenda going on there in that outright denial.

RIP, not a fan but a good man he was I hear.

BTW, Why do catholics get drunk after a death? Celebrating the persons life or something? Ive always found this kinda strange. Today was overkill. Or is it just an Irish Catholic thing?
Only the Irish do it........

The rest of us think its a wee bit strange too.............
