Unlike Xbox Live, you don't HAVE to pay for it if you want to play online. That part of it is still free.
PSN+ right now, in its current state, is a way for members to get discounts on games and DLC, and to get free games every month,early access to demos and betas, and automatic downloads for games that require the updates.
You can still play online for free, and all the other features that are normally on PSN are still free.
Its just extra. Its 50.00 bucks a year. I usually spend about 500.00/year on stuff on my PS3, and if they give me enough discounts/ free stuff, then it will be worth my money.
