Pirlo’s talent wasn’t enough to allow Italy to overcome the reigning World and Europe champions, but the final 1-1 result was satisfying, because the Azzurri were a real match for the Spanish side.
In particular, Juventus’ block played a key role: the six Bianconeri fielded in the line-up by Prandelli showed good football. Just Barzagli missed the encounter, but he should be available for the clash against Eire scheduled on 18 June.
The Bianconeri’s troop - Buffon, Bonucci, Chiellini, Pirlo, Marchisio and Giaccherini - played for ninety minutes in this evening's game in Gdansk. Moreover, Pirlo was a key figure in the Azzurri’s scoring action: after 60 minutes, the midfielder dribbled two opponents and with a clinical shot found Di Natale who was capable of taking Italy in front thanks to an accurate crosswise shot. The Spanish side responded after four minutes with Fabregas and following the equaliser they seemed to spread. However, a few minutes before the final whistle, Marchisio had the chance to seal the game but following some good passes, his shot was too central and didn’t surprise Casillas. All the Juventus players showed a good performance, especially the defense which was able to resit the ‘Furias Rojas’ [Red Fury], and the midfield unit, focused and capable of pushing forward.
The next fixture for Prandelli’s men will take place on 14 June in Poznan against Croatia.
