Andrea Pirlo has called for his team-mates to take each game as it comes as the championship title race enters its final sprint. The midfielder showed another solid performance during last night’s 2-0 win over Palermo, in which the Bianconeri capitalised on Milan’s home defeat to reclaim first place and seize control of their own destiny.
And the return to the summit of Serie A was naturally the first topic on the agenda in Pirlo’s exclusive interview with Sky.
“It’s been a while since we were top,” he began. “Yet we’ve always been aware that we can do well and stay in touch with first place. We didn’t expect Milan to lose yesterday, especially after they went in front. Fiorentina did us a favour and made us even more determined to beat Palermo.”
The 32-year-old, who tasted Scudetto success with the Rossoneri last year, possesses a wealth of experience in challenging for major honours. Experience that will prove vital during the final run-in.
“We know that we have seven finals ahead of us, but everything now depends on us. Winning all of them would put us out of sight. As it stands, we have 50% possibility of winning the Scudetto. I don’t think Milan are in crisis, yesterday they were affected by tiredness from the Champions League. But, I reiterate, now it’s all down to us.”
Juventus will be aiming to maintain their title push with three crucial points against Lazio on Wednesday night in Turin.
But despite the Bianconeri’s red-hot form producing four victories on the bounce, Pirlo sought to emphasise the importance of remaining focused on the task in hand.
“We need to play all our fixtures without thinking about the name of our opposition, taking each game at a time,” he concluded.
