Andrea Pirlo is confident that Italy can go all the way in this year’s European Championships.
The 33-year-old, whose masterful midfield display helped send England packing last Sunday, believes the Azzurri are capable of seeing off a strong German side in Warsaw.
“Germany like to play football and can give us problems,” said Pirlo from the Italian training base. “But if you consider the previous clashes, starting from the 2006 encounter, they will certainly be fearful of us.”
“We’ll be facing a team who have played to a high level over the past four years and possess the right mentality.
“How can they be beaten? By scoring, but first we’ll need to create chances, maintaining possession will be an important factor. They have many champions, I think Ozil will operate as the fulcrum as he does with Real Madrid. We’ll need to be alert to his movement.”
The media have heaped praise on the midfield general after his nonchalant penalty kick put Prandelli’s men one foot in the semi-finals.
“The nicest thing is the compliments I’ve been getting from my peers. I’ve read words from great champions and I’d like to thank everyone.
“I’m proud I’m able to play in important games, I’m almost at the end of my career and I’m going to enjoy it all the way.”
Pirlo concluded by reiterating the team’s determination to bring the trophy back home.
“There’s the same desire as we have at Juve,” he affirmed. “We’re aspiring to achieve a great success. We also look to attack with the national side and provide the right spectacle for the fans.”
“The four semi-finalists have adopted the same attitude and deserve to be here. We’ve still haven’t done anything as it stands, but we’re determined to win the European Championships.”
