Andrea Pirlo starred as Italy played out a 1-1 draw with Croatia in Poznan.
The Bianconeri midfielder opened the scoring shortly before the break courtesy of a fine free-kick which curled past Pletikosa’s despairing dive.
Cesare Prandelli’s side, featuring the same six Bianconeri who impressed in the Azzurri’s opening encounter against reigning champions Spain, were unable to extend their advantage in the second half and found themselves punished eighteen minutes from time by Mandzukic’s close-range finish.
Italy will require a win from Monday’s final Group C fixture against Republic of Ireland in order to keep their quarter-final hopes alive.
