Injured Nedved in fitness battle Tuesday 15 February, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pavel Nedved is in a race against time to prove his fitness ahead of the Champions’ League clash against Real Madrid.

The Juventus ace knows that if he’s to feature at the Santiago Bernabeu on February 22, he realistically must play some part in the Messina game on Saturday.

The Czech international was initially pencilled in to return from injury in Week 24 but he wasn’t included in the squad that beat Udinese 2-1.

Nedved’s been on the treatment table for the past few weeks ever since picking up a knee problem.

The 2003 European Footballer of the Year limped off in the win against Brescia on January 23 and he’s still not fully recovered.

Nedved again trained separately from the squad on Monday, escalating fears that he won’t be available for the Spanish trip.

The midfield dynamo, who Juventus have struggled to replace, will undergo a further medical today to assess his progress.

Capello is certainly hoping that Nedved gets the green light to play given his importance to the side.

"He is a player who offers great security to the rest of his teammates during games," explained the Coach.

"We could do with him in the team. Since Wanderley Luxembourgo took over Madrid have improved. They recover the ball a lot better and they are better defensively."

Capello, who led Madrid to the Liga title in 1997, added: "This is the tie of the round and I think it is going to be very, very close."

Nedved likely to face Real Wednesday 16 February, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pavel Nedved looks set to play against Real Madrid on Tuesday after he returned to training with Juventus.

The midfielder worked alongside his teammates yesterday which has increased optimism over his use at the Santiago Bernabeu on 22 February.

The Czech ace has been struggling with a knee injury for the last three weeks but things are looking good for his return.

Nedved was able to sprint and work with the ball yesterday, finishing off the session with a light stretch.

His physical condition will be continually monitored over the next few days before a decision will be made on whether he is ready to return.

The general feeling is that the former Golden Ball winner will begin on the bench against Messina on Saturday, before starting in the Champions’ League clash.

Meanwhile, Messina have their problems ahead of the Week 25 tie against the League leaders.

Boss Bortolo Mutti is without the suspended Aronica and Coppola, plus injured captain Sullo.

Pavel Nedved is facing a battle to be fit in time for Juventus' Champions League clash with Real Madrid on February 22nd; Miccoli rules out a return to Turin;

The 2003 European Footballer of the Year, who famously missed the final against Milan that year due to suspension, could face more Champions League heartache if he fails to shake off a knee problem in time for the trip to the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Czech midfielder, who trained separately from the rest of the squad on Monday, will undergo yet another medical on Tuesday in order to gauge his progress.

"He is a player who offers great security to the rest of his teammates during games," explained coach Fabio Capello.

"We could do with him in the team. Since Wanderley Luxembourgo took over Madrid have improved. They recover the ball a lot better and they are better defensively."

Capello, who led Madrid to the Liga title in 1997, added: "This is the tie of the round and I think it is going to be very, very close."
