Because as special as Gigi or any top great goalie in the past were, goalie is still the least special or directly decisive role in a football team, coupled with fullbacks (atleast for majority of football history until fullbacks became more specialized and not just Gary Neville level water carries)). Its great to have a brilliant player in that position, but its not really necessary or must for the most succesful teams in terms of decisiveness, its insanely hard for such a position to compete with players who control, build or decide plays in midfield and attacking positions.
Thats why only 1 goalie in football history has won individual award like that, and even back then for Yashin it had to be a specific year were no attacking players were being that big of a stand out.

as I said it once, you can literally build trump's wall on your goal but it won't make your team win the game if someone isn't scoring against your opponent, on the other hand you can literally have an open goal without goalkeeper at all but as long as you can somehow outscore your opposition you will win.

But defending is much more of a collective effort than attacking tbh.
Put Bonucci into some random weakass team and their defense will get better for sure, but not by much if the other players and most importantly their organisation doesn't change. Put Messi into that same team and their attack will improve massively.

Indeed, best way for a single defender to effect whole team is being a charismatic and organising leader who knows how to get the best out of his inferior teammates. But that would basically make him coach on the pitch, and makes it extra hard. But as you put it, an attacking player simply needs to punish opponents on individual quality and wont be judged based on the success or failure of the collective to function, as a defender would.

fullbacks yes, but goalie actually makes the most difference, take Stegen out of Barca and put a great goalie there and Barca probably is winning La Liga this season, while with Stegen they're trailing Real. and that's with 3 Ballon d'Or contenders in their team, even they can't save Barca with that guy in goal
They ofcourse make a difference, all players on the pitch does. But I mean in comparison with the other positions.

If you put a 10/10 attack vs a 8/10 attack, and both play full EPL, the 10/10 attack wins unless you get some unlucky RNG (its football afterall).
However, the better you can organise and defend, the bigger the penalty you can put to an attack

I enjoy the italian way. You wont be able to attack as well as Spanish teams. So make sure your defence mitigates them that much, that your unchecked attack is actually better.

Heck. Goddamn Legrottaglie had a huge impact on us. As did Barzagli. Cause Chiellini first, and him+Bonucci later were poor at organising. Bonucci got incredibly good at it over time.
But initially, Legro allowed Chiellini to shine, and later Barzagli brought calm and organisation into our defence
People like Barzagli for his incredible talent and huge underrating by the common peasant. But many forget what an enormous impact he had on the development of Bonucci.
Pretty sure Maldini will say the same about Baresi
