Well I guess in the current footballing world, where youngsters are promised fame and money after playing great for 1-2 seasons, it is hard to keep hold of good young players for more than 4-5 years.

If you are not Madrid, Barca, and Bayern, you will always have to go for the second tier top young players (Sterling, Berardi, etc) and hope they win you some titles/cups before being granted the first tier status and leaving for madrid barca Bayern.
