    Parma 0 - 1 Bologna
    Tare 18 (B)
    Stadio Tardini (29,000)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Igli Tare has given Bologna a precious away win at Parma's Stadio Tardini in the relegation play-off first leg.

One of these two teams will play in Serie B next season and this play-off was given an extra twist as the clubs are also local rivals. Parma were hit by a remarkable six suspensions ruling out Alberto Gilardino, Domenico Morfeo, Jorge Bolano, Fabio Vignaroli, Daniele Bonera and Matteo Contini. Marco Marchionni and Sorrentino were also injured, so Coach Pietro Carmignani had precious few choices. Bologna were without Juarez due to a ban, while Theo Zagorakis was sidelined by a back problem.

Mark Bresciano's free kick skimmed the far post after six minutes, but Bologna had the better of the early play and Sebastien Frey rushed off his line to close down Claudio Bellucci after Igli Tare had held up the ball.

The Rossoblu eventually made the most of their pressure after 18 minutes. Full-back Valentin Nastase's cross found Tare at the back post for a looping header that gave Bologna a precious away goal and the lead at the Stadio Tardini.

Parma hit back and Gianluca Pagliuca was at full stretch to palm Francesco Ruopolo's tricky cross-shot and Andrea Pisanu was unable to turn in the loose ball. Cesare Bovo got on the end of a corner kick, but failed to keep his header on target.

There was controversy on the half-hour mark as Fabio Simplicio tumbled under a challenge from Stefano Torrisi, but the referee ignored penalty appeals to assign a corner. The contact did not seem to be so serious as to warrant a spot-kick, though Torrisi did not get the ball either.

There was bad news for Bologna, as Torrisi limped off with a back problem to be replaced by Nicola Legrottaglie. Yet the visitors had another good chance moments later when Mourad Meghni's free kick was inches off Bellucci's out-stretched foot at the back post.

Parma went close on the stroke of half-time with a well-worked team move down the left, but Renato Olive's final shot was charged down by substitute Legrottaglie in the six-yard box.

Carlo Mazzone made another substitution for the second half, replacing Mourad Meghni with Tomas Locatelli. Within 20 seconds of the restart Bellucci found space and his angled drive was just wide of the target.

Parma needed an equaliser, but found themselves kept out by an alert Pagliuca. In quick succession the veteran pushed away a splendid Fabio Simplicio spin and strike, then had his palms stung by a fierce follow-up from Ibrahim Camara.

Australian international Mark Bresciano was particularly disappointing and blasted several free kicks over the bar. Bologna had another opportunity to double their lead from a corner kick, as Carlo Nervo and Locatelli had their efforts charged down.

Parma had another penalty appeal from Fabio Simplicio rejected when he fell under Legrottaglie's challenge and this was more of a shout than the first half incident.

Gialloblu midfielder Pisanu was booked and will be suspended for the decider at the Stadio Dall'Ara on Saturday June 18. The home side was putting more pressure on in this second half and ex-Bologna man Renato Olive nodded a corner on to the roof of the net.

Fabio Simplicio fell for the third time, this time nudged by Federico Giunti as he ran on to Bresciano's pass, but the referee booked him for simulation. The Tardini crowd turned increasingly angry and aimed its fury at Stefano Farina.

Olive was stretchered off the field after falling awkwardly and appeared to have sprained his ankle, so Under-18 international Daniele Dessena was introduced.

Pagliuca rescued Bologna yet again with a fantastic flying save on Fabio Simplicio's curling free kick in stoppages.

The tension rose and in the penultimate minute of stoppages a brawl broke out, sparked by Fabio Simplicio and Locatelli but eventually involving most of the players and members of the bench. Both Coaches were sent off for stepping on to the pitch and two players were also red-carded from the bench - Bologna's Christian Amoroso and Parma goalkeeper Luca Bucci. This means that all of those sent off, including the tacticians, will be suspended for the decider on June 18.

Eight minutes of injury time were not enough for Parma to draw level, though Fabio Simplicio somehow managed to blast over the bar from seven yards in the final seconds of the match. They must now win at the Dall'Ara to stay in Serie A and will have stars Gilardino and Morfeo back in the side.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Parma: Frey; Cannavaro, Cardone, Bovo, Camara; Olive (Dessena 74), Savi (Grella 61); Pisanu, Simplicio, Bresciano; Ruopolo

Bologna: Pagliuca; Gamberini, Torrisi (Legrottaglie 36), Nastase; Nervo, Amoroso (Colucci 81), Giunti, Capuano; Meghni (Locatelli 46), Bellucci; Tare

So I avoided looking at this thread until I watched the recorded match last night after work. Damn, was it awful and ugly. Both clubs, in terms of ugly play, testy attitudes, immature fans, etc. It was a sham. Neither team played like the deserved to be in Serie A. And I'm a big Parma fan. (Though I have to say, Parma fielded a squad that looked more like Serie C1B, with all their true A players either injured or watching from the stands with suspensions.)

If you thought the final Milan-Inter CL match this year was a black eye for Italian football, this match beat it for the ugly prize. Both teams looked like they deserved to go down... and in flames.

Mazzone was probably the real difference in this match, IMO. The crusty old guy was probably the only person on the entire pitch worthy of some respect last night, and I would not be surprised if it was his influence that weighted the outcome.

I'm not so sure how I'm going to take the second leg. It's like watching a car wreck with bodies strewn all over the street. But of course, I'm going to watch. But this is one match that, for the benefit of Italian football, should not be televised.

I'm going to get me some Pepto after watching that...

Carmignani outburst earns ban Wednesday 15 June, 2005

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Parma Coach Pietro Carmignani has been suspended for three games following the brawl and accusations that ended the relegation play-out with Bologna.

Both tacticians were sent off for dissent along with two players who were on the bench – Luca Bucci of Parma and Bologna’s Christian Amoroso – in the final minutes of Tuesday’s 1-0 Rossoblu victory.

Carmignani has been hit hardest with a three-match ban, while Bologna boss Carlo Mazzone is sidelined for two. The two players are each suspended for one game and will pay a £1,600 fine, while Parma midfielder Andrea Pisanu will miss the second leg on Saturday evening due to a yellow card.

The encounter was particularly tense with three Fabio Simplicio penalty appeals rejected and the Gialloblu fuelled controversy after the final whistle with comments that have sparked an FA investigation.

“I have seen some horrifying things take place around Parma this season,” snapped Carmignani. “Not just what I’ve witnessed with my own eyes, but also events my players have told me about. I don’t want to get banned for life, so I’d best be quiet.”

Parma President Guido Angiolini added, “Perhaps this club is seen as an outsider and did not have enough friends in the corridors of power. I can certainly say that if our progress hasn’t been brilliant this season then it isn’t entirely our fault. There are many ways to kill a man and in this case it was done with gloves on to leave no fingerprints.”

These allegations of favouritism will no doubt stir up what was already a tense situation and Parma fans are expected to travel en mass to nearby Bologna for Saturday’s relegation decider.

Gilardino joins Parma tirade Friday 17 June, 2005

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Parma have already been fined for suggesting referees are pushing them into Serie B and ahead of the play-off decider Alberto Gilardino has joined the chorus of disapproval.

“I didn’t think a referee could influence a game, but I was very wrong indeed,” said the Italian international in today’s Press Conference. “An official can also affect the mental state of the players.”

The Gialloblu have been vociferous in their criticism of referees this season and the situation came to a head when Fabio Simplicio had three penalty shouts rejected in the 1-0 defeat to Bologna. The second leg of that relegation play-off will be at the Stadio Dall’Ara on Saturday evening to decide who drops down into Serie B.

Gilardino is one of six players who missed the Tardini clash due to suspension and admits it’ll be his last game for the club.

“I hope to leave Parma by celebrating their Serie A safety, hopefully by scoring the decisive goal,” said the £25m Milan and Chelsea target.

Teammate Giuseppe Cardone agreed that the 1-0 home loss was not a total disaster for the Gialloblu.

“I think that due to the characteristics of the two sides this isn’t over yet,” noted the veteran defender. “Clearly Bologna have a slight advantage, but we’ll try to keep our heads and work our way back into the tie.”

Oh, it will be ugly. It will not be pretty. It will be two teams battling to the death and losing all control of their bodily functions in the process.

Am I going to watch it? Ashamedly, yes...

Serie A Relegation Playoff Preview: Bologna-Parma
    6/18/2005 9:33:00 AM
The 2nd chapter of the relegation saga begins at the Stadio Tardini of Parma. Bologna has thrown the first punch and has drawn first blood. Now it is Parma’s turn to respond with a counter jab of their own or they risk the fate of playing in Serie B in late August.
    BACKGROUND

    Bologna
Last game Mazzone’s men showed up and played. The team is united and believes in the coach. The coach has the respect of his players. This a good sign for when this occurs, crucial moments can be easier to deal with. Mazzone has been around the block in Serie A and he has seen it all. The man is a walking history book and a chronological timeline when it comes to Serie A football. He never coached grand teams excluding Roma, where he found Totti and set the pieces for Capello to use. All in all, he is Bologna’s greatest asset as he has the experience to guide a team away from relegation. Last game Bologna struck early and played defensively beautiful. If his team sticks to the plan then they will be playing in Serie A next year. Another early goal will nail the coffin on Parma. It will be harder away from home, but Parma fans have never been out in great numbers this term. A good team always finds a way to win period.

    Parma
Last game was not exactly a game of brilliance for Parma. They produced a cardinal sin by letting in a goal early by Tare and after that they played like a defeated team. The team showed no spark, ingenuity or the desire to win. They had their chances, but they were pitiful at best. The players have a deep psychological problem that must be overcome, or they just do not care and have accepted the fact that Serie B is their new home. Yes many players will leave if that occurs, but to show no devotion is an insult to the fans and a slap in the face of a once mighty organization that contended for Scudetti. They have a chance to rectify this; however, they must show up and play. This 2nd leg could be like the Reggina vs. Verona a few years back when both teams fought to the death, or a somber occasion that would make a even a board meeting more entertaining. The choice is Parma’s.

    TEAM NEWS

    Bologna
Following Tuesday night’s mini-fight towards the end of the match, Mazzone and Amoroso will be suspended for this game. The Rossoblu will also have to do without Della Rocca, Petruzzi and Daino.

    Parma
Same fate for Carmignani who like Mazzone will miss this game through suspension. Pisanu and Bucci are also suspended as the Gialloblu will also be without the injured Olive, Ferronetti, Marchionni, Bettarini, Sorrentino and Vignaroli.

    PROBABLE FORMATIONS

    Bologna (4-1-4-1):
Pagliuca – Nastase, Torrisi, Gamberini, Capuano – Nervo – Colucci, Locatelli, Giunti, Bellucci – Tare

    Parma (4-4-1-1):
Frey – Bonera, Cardone, Bovo, Contini – Bresciano, Bolano, Simplicio, Camara – Morfeo – Gilardino

    PLAYERS TO WATCH

    Pagliuca (Bologna)
The team veteran. A lot lies in his capable hands as if Parma come and play attacking soccer and penetrate the defence, he will be the last resort. A capable goaltender and a leader, his team will need his expertise.

    Gilardino (Parma)
Was suspended in the last game. He is the bread and butter and life line of Parma. If Parma is to remain in Serie A, the boy must take responsibility and attempt to score. If he does, his Milan suitors will be very pleased as they would attain a goals scorer and moreover, a mature player.

    PREDICTION

Expect Parma to show up and play as they do not want to anger the home fans. However, Bologna has the advantage and winning at the Tardini is not impossible. They are confident and united. Plus, they want to play in the Serie A too next year. Expect a 1-1 draw and for Bologna to remain in Serie A.
