Happy with the result no matter U.S. have one more gold medal than us or not. The new boom in tennis is what excites me the most.
But the fact that we suck at football, basketball and volleyball will be haunting all Chinese sports fans perhaps for a long time. Lul.
Yeah, but you're not India. They're too busy chasing the Guinness Book of World Records anyway.
Now diving has gotten to be monotonous especially for China... even worse than Americans and basketball. Not that the sport wasn't monotonous already.
Though I really got into table tennis this time. Not sure why. China dominated as always. But there was more of a wild backstory this time. Particularly with the women's individual medal and the Chinese social media/fan culture backstory.
But it would be good to see China investing in developing sports that weren't always so moneyballed towards ROI on the number of medals. Something like Spain winning one single medal at football, for example, seems kind of ridiculous to compare to the 8 different ways someone can win medals just because they're some rando in a pool.
And given the haters and controversies this time, I think the Games could also improve by awarding medals for sportsmanship in the future. Stuff that encourages a supposed Olympic values and spirit. There were a lot of good stories of people who may have sacrificed their position to do the right thing and support a stumbling competitor rather than do the dirty thing at all costs for a chance to get a gold. They could even have fellow Olympians vote on it.
FIFA has Fair Play and even Fan Awards. Why not? And if it tweaks the medal count, that could make it more interesting.
But now living in Portugal, I see the folly of the whole medals tally business anyway. India aside, it's so heavily skewed towards population size that it devalues smaller nations. Serbia, for example, deserves recognition for the kind of sporting might they bring with just 6.6M people. Maybe a per-capita award ranking would be good.
I always hate it when economists massbate over "biggest economies" when comparing the likes of, say, India and the UK as if to suggest Denmark is a sh*thole purely on the basis of it having only a few million citizens.
Hilarious how they ended the event with Frank Sinatra’s I did it my Way. 1000IQ way to end the event with all the losers who complained about the opening ceremony.
I think the song was incongruous and not appropriate for the venue and location. But if it were just a stick-in-the-eye to the haters, that would be pretty cool.
The vibe of choosing Phoenix and Air is a bit dated and English-language, but it is very French, which was good to see they went the French indie club route. Even if I did expect to see Sofia Coppola make an appearance at some point.
Even if the rest of the ceremony was very French as expected. I kept joking with my wife, "There will be letters from crackpot American Christians saying this is Satanic."
Can’t believe it’ll be in fucking Brisbane in 2032.
Not even people in Brisbane like Brisbane. Its most famous cultural export is Bluey.
That's why Brisbane needs to import dudes pretending to be female boxers so they can have sex with the other male athletes.
