I'm wondering what kind of reputation Bettega has. As a legendary player with 7 scudetti under his belt, I would expect to hear his name mentioned a lot more often than it is. Do you think he was a real star or was he just a good player who happened to play on strong teams?

I wonder because I don't hear his name mentioned in conjunction with the club's best scorers, even though he is one of them. Not with Platini and Boniek either, not with Scirea as one of the finest etc.

So what was he?

Bettega matched very much the definition of the modern centre-forward. Strong yet agile, with an excellent technique (his back-heeled goal in a Milan-Juventus is remembered as one of the greatest serie A goals ever). He was implacable in the air and had and excellent shot as well. I don't know where you get the idea that he is a less important figure in Juventus' history, Martin, as he is acknowledged as one of the best attackers of his era throughout Italy. I seem to recall that he had a very serious injury at the start of his career, which left him out for a long time and probably would have added even more to his already impressive record if it hadn't occured. I would definitely rate him way above Boniek.

According to this month's issue of Calcio 2000, Bettega netted 129 career goals... compared to 122 currently for DP and 131 for Vieri.

For the old guard, Roberto Bettega is the second more important player ever for Juventus. Just second to Giampiero Boniperti.

Is not coincidental that both players has continued their career in the team after leaving the pitch. both were italian, smart, utterly loyal to Juve and had a close relationship with Agnelli family. Both were also personal friends of Gianni Agnelli.

In the case neither of the two young Elkanns decide to manage the team in the changes that will take place in 2006-2007, and if Moggi is forced or deciced to leave, Bettega is probably the best choice as next GD of Juve....

Platini was a fantastic Juventino and probably more brilliant as a player, but when Agnelli offered him to stay at Juve in a managerial position he prefer to go to international level,(FIFA) were he is at good standing right now.

Delpiero was chosen, years ago, by Gianni Agnelli has the third step in this player-emblem-directive dynasty. But times are changing in the team and the young bosses will have the last word about the new directions Juve will take in the future......

Is this the one you're talkin about kaiser?
Does that look like a back heel to you? If it does then your heel must be in a very funny place in your anatomy:D

No that's not Bobby-gol's backheel against Milan. Bobby's back-heel was an aerial one that spurted out between two defenders and past the keeper. I think. Dammit now I realize I've only seen it a couple of times and long ago. Im pretty sure the cross came from the right, though.

For the old guard ( meaning by this the old time bianconeri supporters, people with 35 or 40 years of supporting Juventus) Bettega is considered just second to Boniperti in the history of the club. Even some of them think that, in the whole, Bettega play a more crucial role for the team than Gianpiero Boniperti.

I saw Bettega at the end of his career, and obviously, never saw Boniperti play.
Meaning, this can be wrong...but i still trust pretty much the voices of the old gobbi i know....

bullshit !

Go for a walk around torino and ask the old guys sitting in the park or outside the street carts... Or sit next to some at delle alpi

The message is the same everywhere and it aint bettega and not even boniperti... The overwhelming consensus of the best, ,most important and most loved player in juve's history is Gaetano Scirea... Not too mention hes undoubtedly the most respected juventino amongst our opponents fans

He is then followed by a group of several others including Bettega, boniperti, sivori, charles, causio, Il Uomo di Goma, furino and zoff... With varying opinions on all of them... Though the same names are allways mentioned

How many of these juve fans of 35 or 40 years that you talk of do you actually know ?

In a personal basis, im totally agree with some points. first, most loved player in juve's history is Gaetano Scirea (also my all time favorite) and second, there is a vast majority of supporters in Torino that consider him the best, most important and most loved.

And your right, im not a Torinese and my base is the opinion of just 3 old juventini...but that doesnt disqualefy their opinion. They are knowedge people about football. And saw Boniperti, Bettega and Scirea....

Also, the Institution as always given preference at Boniperti over Scirea as our most emblematic player.
