We cannot blame Zlatan for his poor form, but it is a fact that he's had fewer chances to prove himself this season and Zlatan's presence a direct cause of that.Whether you will admit it Del Piero has always had a patch of good form for a good number of matches every season, usually ended by injury. Now he not only has to cope with Zlatan(who certainly hasn't deserved to displace him from playing the 90mins every week) but also a biased Capello who subs him in every match and at times has preferred Zalayeta, the club's fifth forward. How many insults can Del Piero take?Thankfully for Zlatan and Capello Del Piero possesses a personality almost the direct opposite of the former and has thus far taken what he's been given without a word of complaint. He deserves to be pissed and we all know he probably is.A lesser sportsman would've put the young upstart in his place but no.
Stuart and I (among others) discussed this topic thoroughly in the Juventus-Livorno match thread, and we came up with some conclusions. It was suggested that Capello, by subbing Del Piero, is only protecting the captain from injuries that stem from fatigue later in the match. I think we all would like to have a healthy Del Piero all of the time, and the further the match goes on the more likely an injury would occur. So Capello might be helping Alex's cause in that way.
Another possiblity stated is that Capello subs Alessandro because he needs more of a "power-forward" in Zalayeta to come onto the pitch. So basically these changes are all tactical by Capello. Maybe our coach wants to take advantage of the tired opposing defense after most of the match has gone by, and to capitalize on that he brings on the powerful Zalayeta to out muscle the defense.
The third suggestion stated was maybe Capello thinks that Del Piero is no longer a full 90 player, which seems like a rather dubious claim to some around here. We cannot really comment on this conjecture because the only people who know about Del Piero's fitness is Del Piero, Capello, and the trainers.
That said, I really do not think Capello has some sort of bias or hate for Del Piero, as that would be nonsense. Capello is one of the greatest Italian coaches ever, and he does what is best for the club. Again we are not there, so there must be something we do not know about.
And about Zlatan, he has been our best striker this season creating more goals than Del Piero. Ibrahimovic has earned himself a spot in the starting XI and deserves it.
I'm not saying Del Piero should be playing in every match, but having accepted his role in the team now the last thing he needs now is more bullshit from the fans. We're the only ones he's had to support him all this while apart from Moggi, you and I both know how the critics blast him whenever he doesn't put in a world class performance(which is more or less every week,by their standards).Alot of the detractors(I won't call you a hater since you're aren't one,by your own admission) say we are overprotective of Del Piero and are blinded from his failures by our idolization of him,but then Zlatan isn't given his due criticism either. There have been times when I'd have preferred Trezeguet in the team to Zlatan(coming from me,that's something) but at those very times I only hear endless praise for Zlatan.Maybe it's the overwhelming desire to have Del Piero chucked out of Juventus for good or just plain bias, but whatever it is it doesn't make these people much better than those who swear by our captain.
I get this too many times, being called a Del Piero hater and all, and frankly I'm tired of that nonsense. Del Piero has been one of my favorite players of all time, right up there with Zidane and Robby. So for people to call me a DP hater is rather naive. What I am also tired of is when people castigate Zlatan for minor issues and have this Del Piero bias that causes them to look past the facts. I would not be so critical of Del Piero on this forum if it were not for the people who say Del Piero has been the better striker or the famous "DP deserves a spot ahead of Zlatan because he is DP." That is some of the material that fuels my criticism on here of Del Piero. I want to take people by the neck and show them that Zlatan has been great thus far and deserves recognition. I think that a player who came to Juventus on deadline day and already has become our most influential striker deserves a lot of credit. What he has done thus far is outstanding. However people still give him harsh treatment because he is the "new guy" and fans still favor Del Piero. That is what I am trying to change.
