It seems he won't come now.

MELLBERG TO STAY IN VILLA'S PLANS

Martin O'Neill has insisted he would have "no qualms" about continuing to play Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg for the remainder of the season - even if he signed a pre-contract agreement with Juventus.

Juventus sporting director Alessio Secco has confirmed the Sweden international, who has been at Villa for six-and-a-half years, "is close to signing a preliminary agreement".

Secco said: "If everything goes well, the player will become a Juve player in July. There are still minor things left to discuss."

But that would not stop O'Neill from continuing to pick Mellberg whose current deal with the midlands club expires in the summer.

The 30-year-old has solved a defensive headache for O'Neill by uncomplainingly switching from central defender to right-back for the majority of the campaign.

O'Neill said: "Olof's commitment has been excellent and, even if he decides to go in the summer or signs a pre-contract, I would have no qualms about continuing to play him.

"This boy (Mellberg) has played nearly seven years for Villa and is a top professional.

"I recognise this is a very important time of his career. When you get clubs the size of Juventus making enquiries about you then you have to weigh things up.

"But I'd be quite happy to play him if he signs a pre-contract. He is well aware he is in his last season of his current contract but the total commitment to the cause is there every single week.

"I have genuinely appreciated the efforts he has put in. I asked him to play right-back for us and he has gone into the role willingly and has never complained to me."

Mellberg remains in Aston Villa plans

Martin O'Neill will continue to pick Olof Mellberg for Aston Villa Football Club, despite the Swede's pending move to Italian giants Juventus in the summer.

Mellberg is out of contract at Villa Park in the summer and reportedly on the brink of signing a pre-contract with Juventus for next season, yet this will not stop O'Neill selecting him for the rest of the this campaign.

"Olof's commitment has been excellent and, even if he decides to go in the summer or signs a pre-contract, I would have no qualms about continuing to play him," said the Ulsterman.

"This boy has played nearly seven years for Villa and is a top professional. I recognise this is a very important time of his career. When you get clubs the size of Juventus making enquiries then you have to weigh things up.

"But I'd be quite happy to play him if he signs a pre-contract. He is well aware he is in his last season of his current contract but the total commitment to the cause is there every single week."

Juve Close In On Immediate Mellberg Move?

Juventus are reportedly hours away from completing the immediate signing of Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg.

The Swedish international’s contract at Villa Park runs out at the end of the season, and it has been common knowledge for a few weeks now that he was set to move to Juventus on a Bosman transfer in the summer.

"Mellberg is close to signing a preliminary agreement with Juventus,” Bianconeri sports director Alessio Secco said a few days ago.

"If everything goes well, the player will become a Juve player in July. There are still minor things left to discuss before he signs the preliminary agreement."

However Juve’s desperate shortage of players in defence has led them to pursue an immediate deal for Mellberg.

Giorgio Chiellini, Jonathan Zebina and Jorge Andrade are all injured, while Domenico Criscito and Jean-Alain Boumsong have been sent out on loan. This currently leaves Juve with just one natural centre back available – Nicola Legrottaglie.

According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, Aston Villa have agreed to allow Mellberg to leave immediately this month in return for €850,000.

If all goes well the 30-year-old could go straight into the team for this Sunday’s away trip at Livorno.

Another imminent signing for Juventus, Momo Sissoko will be unavailable to play until the end of his country Mali’s African Cup of Nations campaign in Ghana.

Mellberg: Tipped to join Juve

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has admitted he does not know if Olof Mellberg has signed a pre-contract agreement with Juventus.

The Old Lady stated they were close to agreeing terms with the Sweden international, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

O'Neill suspects Mellberg may have travelled to Italy on Wednesday during his day off in order to finalise the deal.

If and when Mellberg does commit to Juve, the Villa boss is keen to establish whether he will be able to continue to deliver his best for the club.

"I haven't had a chance to speak to him about the statement from Juventus," he told the Birmingham Mail. "He said he'd tell me if and when he signed.

"The players were off yesterday, and if he went over there yesterday then obviously I need to speak to him to assess his frame of mind in terms of whether he feels he can still play for us without being distracted."

Juve spoof, I wont be able to understand the Mellberg transfer if it happens in summer...we lost Chiellini for a month, we got rid of both Cricito and Bumsing...but I guess we can always tinker with Belardi as CB
