BERLIN, Germany (Reuters) -- Bayern Munich have reached a transfer agreement with Manchester United for England midfielder Owen Hargreaves, Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer said on Sunday.

"Owen is leaving. That was the player's wish. It's a good match and it's also a good deal financially," Beckenbauer told Germany's DSF sports television network.

Beckenbauer did not directly confirm media reports that Bayern will get 25 million euros ($33.75 million) for the Canadian-born Hargreaves. But he did say: "It's in that range."

If confirmed, it would be the highest fee ever for a Bundesliga player.

Hargreaves, 26, has been pleading with Bayern executives to let him go to United all season in a disappointing year both for him and the club.

Bayern finished fourth in the Bundesliga and without any silverware after back-to-back league and Cup doubles.

Bayern had previously rejected United's efforts to acquire Hargreaves before the season and during the mid-season transfer window, saying they were not a bank and needed him.

Beckenbauer, however, had openly urged his fellow Bayern executives Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge to reconsider if the price was right -- arguing that Bayern could use the funds for their own acquisitions.

Hargreaves played in only nine of 34 Bundesliga matches this season, plus five of their games 10 in the Champions League and one of their three German Cup matches. He did not score.

Former Bayern coach Felix Magath had hoped Hargreaves could fill the big gap left by Michael Ballack, who went to Chelsea after the end of last season.

But Hargreaves did not come close, even before breaking his left fibula on September 17 and missing much of the season.

German media reports said that Hargreaves will sign a four-year agreement worth seven million euros per year at United.

Hargreaves is the fifth confirmed Bayern departure after the season that ended on Saturday.

Mehmet Scholl retired, Hasan Salihamidzic will transfer to Juventus while Ali Karimi and Claudio Pizarro will also be leaving -- to destinations still not known.

Hargreaves was outstanding in the World Cup quarterfinal last year against Portugal, lost on penalties, and won the fans' vote as England Player of the Year 2006.

Been the worst kept secret that that would happen for a long time. Good signing for Utd, not sure he is worth that amount of cash though.

Carrick is better than Hargreaves in my opinion. I'd take Zanetti over Hargreaves actually. waste of money, it would have been better if they had donated them to me

26-31, yeah thats what they say in Football Manager 2007 for midfielders =.=
Zanetti over Hargreaves? I hope you're talking about Javier Zanetti because omg who are we joking to? Cristiano over Owen Hargreaves? He's better? What an idiot. Just because you're a Juventus fan doesnt mean you have to go all bias and stuff. Its just like those days when the people in this forum keep saying that Cristiano Ronaldo suck :/ And Manchester Utd have the cash so let them be. Its a good buy. Man Utd needed him. He's expensive so what? Man Utd don't care.

I wont say C.Zanetti is better than Hargreaves but i'll say that Zanetti is class and still highly underated by you and many more.

He was a rock and one of the most valuable players in Roma when they won scudetto in 2001. He was a regular with the national team in 2002 and 2004 and was also a regular in Inter. I don't know if he got seriously injured but for some reason his career started going downhill. Gattuso and Pirlo took over his place in Italy while in Inter, although he was always good, he couldn't develop.
His mistake was staying in Inter so long. He should have left them 2 or 3 years ago and he should have joined us, Milan , Roma or Fiorentina.
This year he has shown his class. Too bad we're in serie B and it won't be apreciated. He's still relativly young for a DMC and i'd keep him as a regular in next 2-3 years.

if you read my posts i hardly show bias to Juve players. I just don't like Hargreaves and think just cause he shown at the world cup cause all the other english players didn't do well doesn't make him good. Plus Man UTd didn't really need him, cause Carrick has been coping fine this season. As Alen said you underrate Zanetti and overrate Hargreaves.
Fine Utd have the money, does it mean they should pay double the price of what a player is worth?

good deal for Manchester United since Owen Hargreaves is a good midfielder who can take the place of Roy Keane.

Good deal for both Hargreaves and ManUtd. And I agree that Zanetti is underrated. He´s very good imo and worth a shot even in Serie A......
