Moggi: 'Azzurri are over'

Luciano Moggi claims the Italy squad “needs to be completely revamped. We can forget getting to the quarter-finals this year.”

The disgraced former Juventus director general now works as a media pundit and gave his scathing view on the World Cup side.

We can forget about getting to the quarter-finals, semis or Final. Our best hope is to make a good impression,” he told ReteCapri.

“Italy needs to be completely revamped. We simply haven’t churned out champions for a long time.”

Moggi is unimpressed by both the remaining 2006 World Cup winners and the new faces.

Fabio Cannavaro has class, but his passport has expired. Gianluca Zambrotta and Gennaro Gattuso have run out of petrol. We shouldn’t expect much from the Azzurri.

“There are teams far stronger than we are, starting from Argentina, even if they left Esteban Cambiasso and Javier Zanetti behind.

Brazil and England are good, but let’s not underestimate Paraguay, who in qualifying beat both Brazil and Argentina.

Italy open their World Cup campaign on Monday evening against Paraguay at 19.30 UK time.

Moggi is being Captain Obvious.

He's 100% correct about the lack of young talent in Italy. I'm talking about players you can just tell will make it at a high level, not those with just potential.

The 2006 victory will be the last for a while.

I don't agree, look at the 2006 winning team and there were many guys in there who were nothing at a young age. Players develope at different stages. And besides, the World Cup is about coming together as a team and getting it right. There were guys in the 2006 team who are not particularly great players individually but all did a job.
