Why? :D

He'll only miss one single match, against an already relegated Atalanta, where even a win won't change anything, probably.
It's still a pretty big game for them. Sampdoria are playing Napoli which is no way a guarenteed victory. I don't think they'll beat Atalanta now.

Tacconi:
"Italy will, unfortunately, end up badly. As Bearzot did it in Mexico 1986, after winning the WC in Spain in 1982, Lippi is taking some azzurri players to South Africa as a gratitude, because they won the trophy in Germany. But there are finished players, like Grosso and Cannavaro, who aren't in condition to play a great world cup."

For those who don't know, Stefano Tacconi is a Juve legend. An ex-goalkeeper who was our #1 during the Trap era when we won the CL in 1985.

In 1986, Bearzot took some old and out of form players like Scirea, Tardelli, Conti, Rossi, Cullovati or Altobelli, who were taken to the WC mostly for what they did in 1982. After some uninspiring performances in the groups, they were eliminated in the first knock-out round.

It's a strong prelude and possibility, but then Italy in 1982 barely scraped through the group stage with 3 draws and pretty poor performances, you need to find momentum.

The Italian team has gone down the shit these days. A few years back, all the players were either from Juventus, Inter, Milan or Roma. Now, they have more players from mid table teams than ever.

It doesn't happen in just Italy, England too, although good English players are a premium and the top 6-7 teams tend to hoard the better ones. Spain are lucky that Barcelona provide so much of the core, their philosophy is good. Inter are the strongest team in Italy and well.....let's not talk about their Italian players.

In 2006 9 of the 23 were not from the teams you mention there, to be honest I'd rather have someone like Di Natale or Cossu who is a leading star at his side playing every game rather than someone sitting on the bench. Because someone comes from a big club it doesn't mean they are necessarily better, look at Gattuso and Grosso.
