Gattuso Blames Lack Of Sharpness
Italy midfielder Gennaro Gattuso believes physical frailty was the key in his side’s quarterfinal exit from EURO 2008… The Azzurri crashed out of the competition last night, losing to Spain via penalty shootout in their final-eight clash in Vienna.
La Nazionale limped through to the knockout phase amid criticism for appearing lazy and unmotivated, as they slumped to a 3-0 defeat by the Netherlands in their Group C opener and were held 1-1 by Romania.
But Gattuso was adamant that there was no lack of desire within the squad, insisting the only real problem was physical conditioning.
“Aside from the opening match, the only thing we were really lacking was the sharpness we had in the World Cup,” said the AC Milan man.
“The spirit was the same and so was our desire to amaze and find our place in history, but our legs didn’t carry us as well.”
Understandable
Iker Casillas was the hero for Spain, the Real Madrid goalkeeper denying Antonio Di Natale and Daniele De Rossi to lead La Roja to a 4-2 shootout win and a semi-final against Russia.
But while Gattuso admitted the Italy camp is distraught after the loss, he reasoned that perhaps it was their turn to suffer from the spot.
“We are very upset, which is natural when you are part of a squad and wear the Azzurri shirt,” said the 30-year-old. “I am very proud to wear this jersey and be part of this team, as we proved we never give in.
“We won the World Cup on penalties and lost Euro 2008 on spot-kicks, so it’s understandable. You can train for penalties all you like, but when you get there the legs are shaking and it can go against you.
“Sometimes it goes well, sometimes it doesn’t. It is human to make mistakes. Practising isn’t really effective, as when you are there in front of the fans with the whole nation hanging on your shoulders, it does things to your mind.”
Missing
Gattuso was ineligible to take the field at the Ernst Happel Stadion after receiving two bookings during the group stages, leaving De Rossi and Simone Perrotta to fill the combative midfield roles.
Andrea Pirlo was also absent through suspension, and Rino believes the Azzurri suffered notably from his fellow Rossoneri’s absence.
“The team was missing Pirlo for the way he moves the ball around, without taking anything away from the other players,” he said.
Passion
Italy’s underwhelming campaign has led to speculation that coach Roberto Donadoni will get the sack, with many seething at his tactical and personnel choices throughout the tournament.
But Gattuso stood up for the former Milanista, insisting he has always had the full backing of the dressing room.
He said: “We have great respect for Donadoni and he is a good man who puts a lot of passion into his work and tells you to your face what he thinks, which in my view is very important.”
