I can't say that Italy deserve to qualify...but they did! They had luck,in football, chance is with the big teams!Hope that Spain will rape Italy asses in the quarter finals(except Il Capitano)...
they had luck??
an offside goal allowed against them allowed and a perfect valid goal disallowed
both at crucial points of the games which could ve changed the result

Cassano was amazing today, Toni gets himself into these scoring positions but just isnt putting them away. Its like he suffers from stage freight or something, same story in the world cup, he didnt score until the quarter final. Id like to see a Cassano-Del Piero partnership, but with Cassano dictating the play. His first touch is outstanding, and he continuously supplies the front men with scoring opportunities.

Shame that Pirlo is suspended, his creativity in the middle of the park is important for this side. I dont see anybody else in the squad who is as good as he is in his position. Gattuso wont be missed too much as we can still play with Camo or even Aquilani.

The defense is looking rather solid, and De Rossi is a monstor is that midfield anchor role. I cant believe Donadoni didnt play him in the first game v Holland, that was utter madness. Im not convinced with Ambrosini, but it seems Dona has a love affair with the guy. He has some flashes of brilliance but i feel there are much better players than him who should of been called up.

All in all, im happy with todays performance. With the injury to Ribery + Abidal's stupidity the game turned our way and i never really saw France coming back. Should have easily been at least 3-0 at the break.

Domenech proved what a halfwit he is, and im sure he will cop the criticism back home. I mean he brings Nasri on, then subs him to bring on Boumsong? Yes they were short in defense after Abidal's sending off, but taking a creative player off who you just put on was a very bad move and it was obvious as the game wore on. I feel a better option would have been to take a holding midfielder off such as Makelele or Toulalan, but i suppose Domenech just proved us and everybody right, he screwed France big time.

Going to be tough against Spain, they are in top form and the Villa/Torres partnership is very scary but i feel Italia have a chance. We will be recharged after qualifying, i wont rule out the Azzurri even going all the way.

Though IMO, Holland deserve to win it.. and i wouldnt begrudge them a victory as they have shown what a top side they are.

FORZA ITALIA!

well he hasn't played with these players in over 4 years, so it's not that surprising he hasn't developed that kind of connection with the guys yet. He did make a number of good runs forward but we ultimately ended up sending balls in the box to toni. A number of times zambo or grosso could of squared the ball to him at the top of the box.

Player Ratings from Goal.com:

FRANCE

Coupet: 8 – Has been criticised this tournament but tonight he was superb, helping to keep the score down with a brilliant tip onto the post from Grosso, and another save onto the woodwork from Toni in injury time.

Clerc: 6 – Not too bad defensively, and did not disgrace himself against Cassano. Provided nothing going forward though.

Abidal: 4 – Shocking decision by Domenech to play him at centre back. The game was lost when he gave away a penalty and got himself sent off. I wonder what Philippe Mexes must be thinking sitting on his settee in Rome.

Gallas: 5 – Struggled to cope with Toni’s strength, and was only let off by the striker’s dreadful finishing. A bad example to his team-mates also. How he is captain of Arsenal I do not know.

Evra: 5.5 – Certainly not the same outstanding player for country that he is for his club. Seemed disinterested at times. Was he playing for his manager?

Makelele: 5.5 – One of the greatest holding midfielders of all time, but at the age of 35 his time is now up. It is time to pass over the baton.

Toulalan: 7.5 – Excellent. Did virtually everything in midfield for France, and created the team’s best chance for Henry. One of the few French players who was really up for the game.

Ribery: N/A – Started brightly before picking up what looked a serious injury after just eight minutes. His departure was a massive blow.

Govou: 4 – Virtually anonymous. Govou shouldn’t have even made the French squad, let alone the team. Simply a disgrace that David Trezeguet was left at home.

Henry: 6.5 – Tried his best, and caused the Italians some problems at times. However he missed a fine chance to equalise at 0-1, and had the misfortune of deflecting De Rossi’s free kick into his own net.

Benzema: 7 – A bright spark up-front for France. Always looked the most likely player to score, and would have hit the back of the net if it wasn’t for a world class save from Buffon.

Substitutes

Nasri: N/A – Replaced the injured Ribery but only lasted 16 minutes before he was withdrawn for Boumsong following Abidal’s sending off.

Boumsong: 6 – Had a nervy first five minutes after coming on, but in truth he didn’t do too bad given the circumstances.

Anelka: 6 –Made no impact on the game following his late introduction.

ITALY

Buffon: 8 – Confirmed his status as the best goalkeeper in the world with a simply magnificent fingertip save from Benzema.

Zambrotta: 7.5 – Bombed up and down the right flank, particularly in the first half. Back to something near his best following his mistake against Romania.

Panucci: 6.5 – A calming influence in defence. Offered some tactical organisation in the absence of Cannavaro. Almost scored with a header too.

Chiellini: 6.5 – Another committed display from Chiellini, who showed his typical leadership qualities. Made one mistake in letting Henry through but he was not made to pay.

Grosso: 7 – Not as impressive as in his first two games, but still did very well, and almost scored when his free kick crashed off the post.

Gattuso: 7 – Surprisingly good in the first half, he was simply more up for the game than the French. Tired as the match wore on. Booked and will miss the quarter final against Spain.

Pirlo: 8 – Simply on another planet in the first half. Scored the penalty, dictated the play, and one through ball to Perrotta was pure genius. Also got booked and will be a big miss against Spain.

De Rossi: 9 – An absolute colossus in the centre of midfield. This was the De Rossi who was the best player in Serie A last season. Scored a fortuitous goal, but he deserved this luck. A beast.

Perrotta: 6 – A little off the pace, but once again he provided some much needed balance to the Italian midfield.

Cassano: 7 – Drifted in an out of the game, but had his moments, including one stunning back heeled through ball to Zambrotta. Will need to bring some more effectiveness into his game, even if he is clearly a better choice than Del Piero.

Toni: 6.5 – Held the ball up well, and won the penalty, but he could have had a double hat-trick tonight so awful was his finishing. I have never seen a striker scuff so many shots in one game. Looked exhausted at the end - could the long season have taken its toll?

Substitutes

Ambrosini: 6 – Slightly bemusing decision by Donadoni to bring him on for Pirlo, but it seemed to work in quelling France's strong start to the second half.

Camoranesi: 6 – Never really got into the game during his limited time on the field, although he had one shot deflected wide.

Aquilani: N/A – No time to make an impact.

Just came in,

FORZA AZZZZZZZURRRRRRRRRRIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:weee:

Really we had the game in control, yeah pitty for France for losing Ribery but if they rely only on him, they got a problem.(we miss Canna the whole tournament)

Bravo to everyone, played really well and i can proudly say and after Holland,in this group we deserved to go through!
France looks like shit, really, they have no game at all,and IMO Domenech is to blame at 80% of their failure.
ANd Romania, they only play tactical defence, with counter attack that relies on MUTU.
Italy didn't play bad in any game, even vs Holland, yeah we got crashed, but still we had our chances, you can't deny it.
And vs Romania the luck wasn't on our side,Dissallowed goal+penalty...
Tonight we finally WON.not the best performance, but a good one!
And beetwen these 3 teams, there is no even a doubt that Italy desrved it.

Proud of Azzurri anyday,ofcourse today!
Spain match is going to be tough, for sure, but the mission is possible.one game, anything can happen.

FORZA AZZURRI!
Congrats everyone!

Gattuso: I slapped Borriello

Gennaro Gattuso expresses disappointment at missing the quarter-final and reveals why he slapped Marco Borriello!

“I am convinced we have 23 players who are all first teamers. We will battle Spain anyway and our joy remains the same,” said the midfielder who will be suspended for the next game.

The 2-0 win over France and Romania’s defeat to Holland qualifies the Azzurri with goals from Andrea Pirlo and Daniele De Rossi.

“At the end of the day, history can change. After all, we hadn’t lost to Holland for 30 years, so now we ended another taboo.”

Gattuso and Andrea Pirlo will sit out bans against Spain, but the rugged midfielder had words of warning for the Press.

“It’s only normal, I am a player, who doesn’t want to play in a European Championship quarter-final? I am a believer in the group. Great individuals are needed, but you get nowhere without the group.

“I read stories saying we were arguing and didn’t even look each other in the face when eating dinner. That’s total rubbish, we are men and always look each other in the eye.”

Rino always makes his presence felt, even more so when he was substituted and sat on the bench for the final stages.

“(Morgan) De Sanctis and Borriello were pretending Holland were leading 2-0 and you cannot joke about that!

“Borriello made another joke that Marco Van Basten had scored with an overhead kick, so I slapped him.”

Italy needed Holland to avoid defeat against Romania in order to qualify, so there were fears the second-string Dutch side would not have the right motivation.

“I think this year in Italy we also proved the so-called 'biscotti’ are finished. We went to Napoli, who had nothing to play for, and lost so we went out of the Champions League. That is how it should be.”

Few expected the Azzurri to continue in Euro 2008 after one point from their opening two games.

“When you lose 3-0 it is only normal that the World Cup winners are criticised by the media and fans. It would be bizarre to receive compliments.

“We never stopped believing, were very unlucky against Romania and were afraid we’d be going home immediately. We haven’t had good luck with the European Championship recently, so we’re very happy with this result.”
