Italy and France face penalty pain Tuesday 17 June, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tonight’s crunch match between Italy and France could result in a grim penalty shoot-out to resolve third place.

The two World Cup finalists square off tonight knowing that anything less than a win will almost certainly lead to an early flight home.

But they could be handed a further indignity if Romania beat Holland and their game finishes level.

In this situation, France and Italy would be tied for third with identical records and would be forced to take penalties to decide who finishes fourth, even though both sides would still be eliminated.

This is the first year that teams have been required to undergo this formality and it would serve to decide which team takes more co-efficient points, which are used for seeding future tournaments.

Italy Were Wronged In 2002 - Infamous Referee Moreno

Byron Moreno, the infamous Ecuadorian referee, who officiated during Italy’s 2-1 second round defeat to South Korea in the 2002 World Cup, has finally admitted that the Azzurri were wronged during that notorious match.

Italy were eliminated after former Perugia star Ahn Jung-Hwan’s extra time golden goal sent the joint-host nation into ecstasy.

However this all happened after one of the most infamous matches in World Cup history. Giovanni Trapattoni’s men had a perfectly good goal disallowed, had Francesco Totti sent-off for diving when replays showed that he had only lost his footing, while South Korea were awarded a dubious penalty.

After the match Italy declared that there had been a conspiracy against them, claims that were given strength by the fact they had had four perfectly fair goals disallowed in their two previous matches against Croatia and Mexico.

South Korea’s quarter-final against Spain was also ridden with controversy, as the Spaniards also had two legitimate goals chalked off, before the Koreans progressed to the semi-finals on penalties.

Links have been made between 2002 and Italy’s Euro 2008 experience after Roberto Donadoni’s men had three massive decisions go against them during the two games against Holland and Romania.

Moreno was asked about Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s ‘offside’ goal in the first match, and the former official insists that it was the correct decision to allow the goal to stand.

"The rules say that the referee decides,” sniped Moreno to the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“And the referee decided for the immediacy of the action, and the goal after the departure of Panucci off the pitch.”

Moreno then unleashed a bombshell by surprisingly apologising for the disallowed golden goal of Damiano Tomassi during that infamous defeat to Korea in 2002.

"I waited for the decision of my linesman,” he said, comparing Tomassi’s offside to that of Van Nistelrooy.

“Remember South Korea-Italy? I was criticized for the Damiano Tomassi golden goal that was ruled out.

“I admit: it was a mistake. But the responsibility was with the linesman.”

However Moreno then went on to criticise the Italy of Roberto Donadoni for being too defensive, and says this is the reason they are struggling in Euro 2008.

"If they think it is a mistake, it is right to protest,” he stated.

“But it seems to me that this is not the Italy of Lippi.

“They are too defensive, they remind me of the team of Trapattoni. They also suffer the absence of Totti.”

Moreno retired from refereeing in 2003, following two long suspensions in his home country.

In 2002 he received a 20 match ban, after he played an extra 13 minutes of stoppage time during a match between Deportiva Universita de Quito and Barcelona Sporting Club. During this time Deportiva scored twice to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 victory.

After retuning from his suspension, Moreno was suspended again after controversially sending off three players in one match. He retired from officiating shortly after.

Holland 3 - 1 Romania
France 1-1 Italy

Goodbye Donadoni.
Hello Ancelotti.
It those results happen Italy will qualify see below from channel4.com
What happens: Italy qualify if... Friday 13 June, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is out of the Azzurri’s hands, but they could reach the Euro 2008 quarter-finals even with a draw.

Holland’s 4-1 thrashing of France has sent Marco Van Basten’s men through to the next round and guaranteed top spot in Group C with six points.

The second qualification spot is up in the air, as Romania have two with France and Italy on one apiece.

This means that Romania will definitely go through if they beat Holland – something they already achieved in qualifying for this tournament.

However, it is possible that the Azzurri could reach the quarters even with only a draw against France.

That is because if Holland beat Romania and Italy draw with Les Bleus by scoring at least one goal, all three teams would be tied on two points.

The head-to-head record would be entirely even with a draw in each encounter, but Italy would have a better goal difference in these clashes, having scored against both Romania and France.

The fact remains that it is out of Roberto Donadoni’s hands, as Holland need to get a result against Romania.

This is worrying for three reasons and the Italian media is already swarming around two of them. Firstly, Romania won their qualifying group ahead of Holland, having managed a win and a draw in those encounters.

Second, the Dutch are already qualified and could field a second string side, safe in the knowledge leadership of Group C is assured.

The third and most dispiriting conspiracy theory is that the way the competition is structured means Holland could knock out Italy and France, therefore avoiding a potential semi-final rematch.

It brings back unfortunate memories of Euro 2004, when the Nazionale was eliminated despite beating Bulgaria in the final round because Denmark and Sweden drew 2-2 – the only result that guaranteed both Scandinavians would go through.

Then ill change my prediction to :

Holland 3-1 Romania
Italy 0-0 France

:D

Either way,i dont see Italy qualifying.I expect Holland to do them a favour by beating Romania, but then Italy will blow it up by not getting the required result themsleves..Donadoni will be booted out,and the Italian bosses will put Ancelotti on speed dial.

If Romania looses 1-0 or 2-0, and Italia v France 0-0, they'll thru.
Italia will go thru if they draw 0-0 against France and Romania looses 3-0 or more.

I'm not really sure but that's what I get.
If Romania looses 1-0 and Italy France draw 1-1, Italy will go through right?

Again, If Romania looses and Italy France match ends in a 0-0 Romania is through?

If this happens Italy and france will be eactly level on 2 points each and same goal difference of scored 1 and conceeded 4.

So it depend on the score that Romania lose by to holland they will have to lose by at least 3 goals. Then all 3 teams will be exactly level on goal difference etc if Romania lose 3-0.

I think the qualifier is drawn out of the hat then.

if romania lose by 4 italy and france will have a penalty shootout to see who qualifies
