No one argued against Donadoni's lack of wit or tactical astuteness - but the ref/linesman fuked up critically. When we saw this with Juve, we pointed it out even if it involved poor tactics and subs by Ranieri. Because its Italy now doesnt mean the point of view should change imo unless one has something against Italy. Kind of the same way few would agree if Inter were clearly screwd by a particular decision

Player ratings from GOAL.COM

ITALY

Buffon 9 – His penalty save was worth this rating alone, a stop that will go down as one of the great saves in European Championships history.

Zambrotta 5 – Shocking mistake for Mutu’s goal, and struggled at times to get the better of Rat.

Panucci 7.5 – Excellent at the back. Organised the defence, and scored Italy’s equaliser. Conceded the penalty, but it was a very poor decision by the referee, and that is being kind and diplomatic.

Chiellini 6.5 – Won everything in the air, and formed a decent partnership with Panucci. Created his partner’s goal with header towards the far post.

Grosso 8 – Outstanding again, particularly in the first half when he bombarded forward at will, and whipped in some great crosses.

De Rossi 6 – Slightly disappointing, but still much better than the players he replaced Ambrosini and Gattuso. Would have scored with a header if it wasn’t for a magnificent Lobont save.

Pirlo 6.5 – Kept Italy ticking in the middle of the park, but did not find any killer passes. His set-pieces were generally poor.

Perrotta 6.5 – Nothing eye-catching but he was crucial to Italy’s balance, which was the key to Italy’s fine first half. Donadoni blundered again by taking him off, thus completely unbalancing the side.

Camoranesi 7.5 – Italy’s best final-third player, he was involved in everything in the first half. Tired after the break.

Del Piero 5 – A massive disappointment. Missed an excellent early chance, and then never made an impact, leading to his eventual substitution.

Toni 7 – All that was missing from his performance was a goal, and in truth he did find the back of the net but was denied by a simply shocking decision from the linesman. Could have had a hat-trick today. Unlucky.

Subs

Cassano 7 – A bright spark after coming on, but Donadoni replaced him for the wrong player, meaning he was playing in an unbalanced team. Once again Donadoni got it all wrong.

Quagliarella 6 – Did not get enough touched to make an impact in the game.

Ambrosini N/A – Only played a few minutes at the end.

ROMANIA

Labont 9 – A series of stunning saves to deny the Italians. The stops from Toni and De Rossi headers were world class.

Contra 6.5 – Sound down the right flank, even if he was left exposed in the first half to Grosso’s forward thrusts.

Tamas 8 – Outstanding. A rock in defence. Also good in possession, and went close with a long range free kick.

Goian 7 – Continued his solid partnership with Tamas, as the pair impressed for the second game running.

Rat 6.5 – Did really well going forward, but was caused a few problems defensively by Camoranesi in the first half.

Petre 4.5 – Very poor. Torn apart by Grosso, and also missed a fine chance at 1-1 to put his side back ahead.

Chivu 7 – A class act once again in the middle of the park. Took control in the second half after Perrotta went off the field. Hit post with a deflected free kick.

Radoi 6 – Made a steady start to the game until he was substituted after just 20 minutes due to a facial injury.

Codrea 6 – Lots of quantity in midfield but not too much quality. Made one goal saving tackle on Perrotta.

Mutu 7.5 – A quiet first half, but outstanding after the break. Put Romania ahead, created a one-on-one chance for Petre, but unfortunately missed a penalty. However it wasn’t really a miss, it was a wonder-save from Buffon.

Niculae 6 – Busy and industrious throughout although he maybe should have been more involved.

Subs

Dica 6.5 - Replaced Radoi early on, and largely did well. Inventive, intricate and tricky in possession.

Nicolita 6 - Did much better than the player he replaced, and contributed to Romania's sound final third to the game.

Cocis N/A - Brought on to run down the clock.

I never said that you like the formation, you all wanted Grosso and Del Piero to play. you also didn't want Gattuso and Ambrossini. You didn't want Barzagli and Materazzi.

You got what you wanted but the formation was wrong, so were the tactics, thus my letter.
well those changes weren't enough. and yeah he needed to change the system, because mainly it was the system that giving Italy these results. He needs to play with two forwards at front, and 4 Midfielders at least behind.

Riva reveals Italian anger

Federation director Gigi Riva reveals the Azzurri were “angry” after their controversial 1-1 draw with Romania.

“The players were angry because they know they put in a great performance and were penalised,” said the Italy legend.

Norwegian referee Ovrebo infuriating the Nazionale when he disallowed a valid Luca Toni goal for offside and awarded a soft late penalty for Christian Panucci’s tussle with Niculae. It was saved by Gigi Buffon from Fiorentina’s Adrian Mutu.

“Toni’s goal on the stroke of half-time could have changed the game, while thankfully Mutu’s penalty did not do us too much damage.

“It is a bad sign, though. The referee is there to do his duty and I really hope he didn’t make decisions based on likes and dislikes, as that would be tragic for Italy and for the entire European Championship.”

The Italians were also furious with the officials after their 3-0 opening defeat to Holland had a controversial Ruud Van Nistelrooy goal.

“We must not use this as an alibi, but rather as motivation. I am convinced if we play like we did today, we can play a great game against France, too.”

They are still in the running and must defeat Les Bleus in the last game, while Romania are also still in it as they face Holland.

“It would be better for us if France won tonight against Holland,” mused Riva.

If the Dutch win, they would already be qualified and could field a second string side in the final match with Romania.

Meanwhile, President of the AIA Referees Association Cesare Gussoni also commented on tonight’s decisions.

“I don’t want to comment on individual incidents, but I will say the referee was not up to the standard of this match.”

-----
just like in the Holland match, a decision went against us which had a major influence on the game. Sure Italia havent played the best, but theres no doubt the refs have played a major part in our downfall..

Back to your 4-4-2? he could have played this and actually won

Buffon
The Maggot Panucci Chiellini Grosso
Camoranesi De Rosi Pirlo
Del Piero Toni Cassano
could be better but still, Italy's defense is full of clowns, they would concede that way, with Panucci and Zambrotta playing next each others

and my 4-4-2 is not a tactic I only like in this world, most of the teams in Europe do play that way. and not every 4-4-2 is Capello's 4-4-2..

Buffon

Zambrotta Materazzi/Barzagli Chiellini Grosso

Pirlo

Quagliarella/Di Natale Camoranesi Cassano

Toni Del Pie

Don curses Italian luck

Roberto Donadoni was left cursing Italy’s luck after their dramatic 1-1 draw with Romania and took the pressure off Gianluca Zambrotta.

“It certainly wasn’t a lucky game! We worked hard, created a lot of chances and at the end risked losing an incredible match,” said the Coach.

Luca Toni had a goal disallowed for an incorrect offside position in first half stoppages, as Paul Constantin Codrea was keeping him onside.

It was a bitter blow just days after Holland’s opening goal by Ruud Van Nistelrooy was awarded despite Christian Panucci’s position.

“I am not accustomed to discussing referees. Let’s just say it was an off day for him. I find it funny that the linesman can see Panucci off the field against Holland, but not a player on the pitch holding Toni in play,” continued Donadoni.

“We saw what we always have – this is the squad. A game can go wrong, as it did against Holland, but this team has never stopped being this one.”

Zambrotta was heartbroken when his error handed Adrian Mutu the opening goal, though Panucci equalised less than a minute later.

“The Zambrotta incident can happen, it was bad luck. Clearly, when you concede a goal it all seems bigger, but he had a great overall performance.”

The Azzurri are still in Euro 2008, but it all goes down to a victory over France in the final game. Romania are also in with a good chance of qualifying, pending tonight’s Holland-France encounter.

“Now we are facing the final game and have to get maximum points. Obviously whenever a side starts a competition they want to get full points, which we haven’t been able to do in these opening two games. We have not been fortunate so far, we hope it turns around.”

Donadoni changed five players from the starting XI that lost 3-0 to Holland, but insisted that did not mean he made a mistake in the first match.

“Those who didn’t play today are certainly not to be pointed out as those 'guilty’ of the Holland defeat. We lose, win or draw every game with all 23 players.”

the 4-4-2 is popular because it is the easiest to implement. It is the simplest tactic a manager can imply, there is no creativity in choosing the right players for that and it is bottom line the first tactic a manager learns.
Buffon

Zambrotta Materazzi/Barzagli Chiellini Grosso

--------------------------Pirlo------------------------

Quagliarella/Di Natale--- Camoranesi---- Cassano

----------------Toni---------------- Del Pie

no creativity in this??

FIGC demands UEFA ref apology

FIGC President Giancarlo Abete wants to know if UEFA will publicly comment on Luca Toni’s goal incorrectly ruled out for offside.

“I think UEFA at the highest level wanted to confirm Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s goal was valid, so they won’t have a problem confirming that the errors today were indeed mistakes. It would be very strange to do otherwise,” said the FA chief.

The controversy over Holland’s opener in the 3-0 win over Italy was stirred up further when UEFA officials came out to back the linesman’s decision.

Christian Panucci was considered active despite being off the field injured, but in today’s 1-1 with Romania there were no doubts Toni was in play.

“I expect UEFA to evaluate the incidents and maintain consistency. If they are going to take responsibility for all the refereeing decisions, then they should do so when they are right or wrong. They cannot just come out and comment when it is in their favour,” continued Abete.

“Going into the break 1-0 up would’ve made it a different game. To be honest, most of the incidents did not go our way, as the goal was valid and Romania’s penalty seemed at the very least dubious.

“Nonetheless, we should praise the Azzurri for a good performance and look forward to the next game with France.”

The 1-1 draw prevents Italy’s automatic elimination, but Group C is wide open with Romania on two points and the Azzurri with one.

“We are still in the race and will wait to see the result of Holland-France before focusing on the final match. A victory could send us through and we hope it will still be in our hands.”

or this:

Buffon

Zambrotta Materazzi/Barzagli Chiellini Grosso

----------------De Rossi----------Pirlo---------------

Camoranesi--- ------------------------------ Cassano

----------------Toni---------------- Del Pie-----------

With Camoranesi or Cassano dribble thru the middle, or even De Rossi or Pirlo to create in midfield and hellping work the the wings. And One of Grosso and Zambrotta to have their usual runs when it is needed..

That should've been today's formation, but Donadoni was too late. I hope he uses this against the French, but he'll probably start Di Natale over DP and possibly Ambrosini over De Rossi.

That's the 4-3-3 I posted.
that looks everything but 4-3-3. and the first one is 4-1-3-2 which is also can be said 4-4-2. 4 in defense, 4 in midfield and two attack, which is what I told you from the first place, and not the straight long ball playing 4-4-2 of Capello, and no I am not a fan of that system, never was!

I've just realised everything about scandinavian conspiracy JCK mentioned. Everything started at the Euro 2004 when Ibrahimovic scored a goal against Italy and that famous draw which knocked Italy out of competition. After that Swedes sent Ibarihomivc as a spy to Juventus with the mission to destry Italy's most famous and best club. However he firstly needed to make a name for himself in the first season so Juve fans could consider himself as their own, and he done that. In his second season the domlition plan began (calciopolli was Ibra's master plan, it was obvius. He had access to all Juve's documents and phones) he played good at start of the season but than slowly he intentionaly started to play worse and worse cuz he knew what will happen with Juve and he needed a safe escaping ticket. Ibra's briliancy was never ending and he easily became one of the most disliked players at Juve and noone realised what he was doing. Than Calciopolli came and Ibra almost destroyed Juventus, the damage he done was acceptable so Scandinavians authorities decided to transfer him to Milan (they wanted to AC Milan so they could destroy another great Italian club and in that case until EURO2008 Italy wouldn't have any good Italian team) but Ibra's briliance transformed to idiocy and he joined Inter and there was nothing Italian to destroy. Than came a plan B, since they couldn't stop Italy from qualifying they (scandinavians) decided to take a more direct approach and assigned their refferees to all Italian games so they can screw them up. All of this was sitting right infront of me and I didn't realised that until now :(

P.S. I wish Gsol could read this :D

Ok, joke on side, I'm really disappointed wtih mistakes that refferee made in Italy vs. Romania. Against Holland there was another story, couse they were simply superior team and deserved their win. But against Romania it was another story, Italy maybe didn't played well but still they weren't inferior and had some good chances and I'm sure that scoreline would be different if that goal stood up. I know it's stupid only to blame the refferee, but it's also stupid to say that refferee made correct decisions and that he didn't affected the game.

It doesn't look like 4-3-3 because you drew it like that but in fact Cassano is a forward and plays up front wide and the whole thing becomes a 4-3-3 and that is the exact same starting line up that I said should have been used.
our line ups are different. I am using Camoranesi and Cassano on the sides, and not FORWARD! both are playing midfield. and they can play in the middle anytime Zambo or Grosso run from their side! Both are different formations Jack, look at it carefully, there is no point in arguing over this.
