Donadoni disguises Italy plans
Roberto Donadoni is keeping his training sessions under wraps, but Alessandro Del Piero seems set to partner Luca Toni against Romania.
The Italy boss has been under fire since the disastrous 3-0 defeat to Holland and locked fans and media out of today’s training session for all but the opening 15 minutes.
What did filter through was that Christian Panucci and Marco Materazzi are fit and took part with the rest of the squad after missing out on yesterday’s sitting with muscular problems.
Nonetheless, Giorgio Chiellini was reported to have been tested in central defence with Panucci, while Fabio Grosso at left-back and Gianluca Zambrotta down the right are almost certainties for the Romania game.
Similarly, Del Piero is the favourite to replace Antonio Di Natale in support of centre-forward Toni following the Juventus man’s impressive substitute appearance against Holland.
Antonio Cassano is also a contender to burst into the starting XI, but in the meantime stood out during training with an inventive new trick.
The Sampdoria starlet began playing a football version of bowls, trying to kick the ball from the penalty area to get it as close as possible to the kick-off point in the centre circle.
In a worrying outcome for the Azzurri’s form, assistant manager Mario Bortolazzi beat Cassano.
The Nazionale will fly out from Vienna on Thursday morning towards Zurich for the match that kicks off at 17.00 UK time on Friday.
Italy (probable): Buffon; Zambrotta, Panucci, Chiellini, Grosso; Ambrosini, Pirlo, De Rossi; Camoranesi, Toni, Del Piero
