I think the fact they were leading 2-0 and the weather was so fucking aweful is why they had such a bad second half.

It was soo windy so many passes we blown away and the rediculous rain made everything more difficult. IT looked like it was freezing too. The place looked pretty terrible. Anway No excuse really but Italy always under estimate small teams.

At least 3 points now and a chance to make up for it so soon in the next game.

DP was not great and but no one was really other than Pippo, Oddo .. Pirlo was good too.

I wish Ale scored so bad.. :(

I mean Donadoni had Oddo at right-back and Diana at right midfield from looking at the teamsheet... I only saw the highlights. But in all honesty the Azzurri should crush Faroe Islands.

i wondered the exact same thing? why wasnt de rossi playing hes definetly a better player
It doesn't matter to me who exactly was playing; just thought having a winger in a three-man midfield on the same side as an attacking full-back like Oddo is a little nonsensical.

Buffon fury at "soft" Italy Sunday 3 June, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gianluigi Buffon has slammed the Azzurri for a “soft and superficial performance” against the Faroe Islands.

Only a fine save from the World Cup winner last night prevented an equaliser in the 2-1 victory at Torshavn following carpenter Rogvi Jacobsen’s header.

“A carpenter scored against me? At least I made his dream come true,” said the goalkeeper. “But if I had conceded another then I would have walked off! I hate letting goals in, but I suppose it was better to do so against the Faroe Islands than France.”

The result puts the Azzurri in second place in Euro 2008 qualifying Group B on 13 points behind France with 15, but it was hardly a vintage match.

“The climatic conditions did not help, but in any case we had the usual soft and superficial performance. When Italians face weaker opponents, we never manage to be fully concentrated.

“This is why it is best we give ourselves a wake-up call for Wednesday against Lithuania. The Coach should not need to tell us these things, because we are experienced enough to figure them out on our own.”

While most of the Italy squad have looked at the positive aspects of the game, namely the three points, Buffon was a lone voice in his bitter criticism of their general attitude.

“Gigi made one save and that is what he is there for,” noted tactician Roberto Donadoni.

Alex takes the points Sunday 3 June, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alessandro Del Piero insists the media were wrong to expect a huge goal haul in the storms of the Faroe Islands.

“The last five minutes we were very disappointed to run such risks, as we had barely let them see the ball before then. At least the carpenter has his place in history,” he said after Italy’s 2-1 away victory.

Rogvi Jacobsen scored only the Faroe Islands’ second goal in this Euro 2008 qualifying campaign and is a carpenter by trade.

“This match had been painted as a walkover, but when we saw the state of the pitch, the terrible weather conditions and the fact the side was not entirely improvising, we saw that really was not the case.”

Nonetheless, the three points send Italy just two behind Group B leaders France, who saw off Ukraine 2-0.

“The result and France’s win over Ukraine puts us in second place despite the tough start we had a year ago. So this is definitely a positive evening for Italy.”

Del Piero had been fielded in a 4-2-3-1 system, but admits the tactic didn’t go entirely according to plan.

“At the start the movement went well and we could certainly have finished a lot better. Unfortunately it wasn’t easy for me to find space between the lines, as the rain slowed the ball and the Faroe Islands put 10 men behind the ball permanently.

“The idea was to find space between the lines, but as they went so very deep there really wasn’t a gap! Even then, had we scored a third goal earlier then it could have been far more.”

The Juventus captain, Aimo Diana and Cristiano Lucarelli wasted glorious scoring opportunities, while Andrea Pirlo’s free kick was turned on to the upright.

When the journalists pointed out that Francesco Totti will not need to undergo surgery to remove the metal plaque in his leg, and is therefore theoretically available for a September recall, Donadoni cut the interview short.
“I wish him well.”

Speaking of 'The Great One'

FIGC: Totti's time is up Sunday 3 June, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FIGC President Giancarlo Abete has warned Francesco Totti that he could face sanctions if he continues to refuse a return to the Italy squad.

UEFA President Michel Platini noted this week that players should be suspended if they turn down a call for international duty.

“Platini’s comment was entirely plausible and is shared by the Federation rules, as players who refuse the international call are in for suspension,” said the FIGC chief.

Totti has been out of the Azzurri scene since the World Cup, claiming he needed to focus on a full recovery from his fractured ankle.

Despite that injury, he has been Serie A’s top scorer with 26 goals and is in line for the Golden Shoe as Europe’s top League hitman.

As for Nesta, he has retired from international duty, as he feels that at the age of 31 and with precarious fitness, he cannot handle both commitments.

“This is a difficult situation, though, as Nesta has asked to walk away after giving a great deal to the Nazionale and the Coach has agreed to let him take this move,” explained Abete.

“We hope he will change his mind and that Totti can return in September, as he hinted, because Italy needs a player of his talent.” :rolleyes2

Considering the news that the Roma captain will not require surgery to remove the metal plaque in his ankle, there should be nothing stopping him from returning to the Italy side.

“If Totti is called and he refuses, then that is one thing. Right now Totti and Roberto Donadoni have discussed the matter and agreed to accept that decision.”

This is a matter of utmost importance, as Italy face two crucial Euro 2008 qualifiers with France and Ukraine in September.

“We will not arrive at September living in hope. We have to prepare for the future and that means knowing who will be with us and who will not.”

The Azzurri are now in second place in Group B with 13 points to France’s 15 after their 2-1 victory in the Faroe Islands.

“We got the result and there was some tension at the end, as if you waste that many chances then you will run risks.

“The important thing today was to achieve the three points and put ourselves in a stronger position for qualifying.

It has been a long hard journey for the Nazionale, who went from World Cup winners to a terrible start in the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign under Donadoni.

“We started out with a draw and a defeat, followed by four straight victories, so our situation has definitely improved. There is a long way to go and tonight’s events should reiterate how we need to put every effort into Wednesday’s game in Lithuania.”

FIGC President Abete faces a battle back home over the start of the 2007-08 season. He has requested an August 19 kick-off to give the players greater match fitness ahead of those September qualifiers, but the Lega Calcio refuses to begin before August 26.

“In the last 10 years we have played the first international match of the season in September either with just one Serie A match behind us or none at all, so even starting on August 26 would be an improvement with two rounds played.”

Why isn't Totti banished from the Italian squad? If you're turning down a call to the national team time and time again, then you don't deserve another call back. You're taking up a possible placement for someone who wants it more.

The FIGC should act now, rather than give a shitty warning that they'll step in later. Fucking bullshit...this is the last straw. Time to cut ties with this wolf-rat.
