it was great to see the azzurri play alot better than against the faroes yet an improved squad will be needed against france and ukraine. our current squad had theyre ups and downs and our defense was strong most of the game yet had cracks and was still a little sloppy our offense was strong enough yet we need better finishing. heres my opinion of the azzurri's performance today.
Buffon-a truly flawless performance pervented lithuania's few dangerous attacks and made a couple good saves held onto the ball well after some powerful shots.
Oddo- didnt have a bad game but didnt impress as he recently has. he pressed forward well yet was a little sloppy in his defensive work overall an average performance he is an excellent defender and i hope he continues with the azzurri for years.
Cannavaro- hes definetly been better for club and country then his horrible start to the season yet he still isnt what he was in germany. Didnt stand out today wasnt bad when he was trying yet he seemed to sit around and not want to do anything. he wasnt sloppy yet recently he seems to lack his past motivation.
matterazi- played his game well when called upon did not much break from his position had more action in the second half played well and didnt make any mistakes yet still didnt have alot to do.
De rossi- very sad to say probly our most dissapointing player out there. hes a versatile midfielder who can attack and defend well yet tonight he did neither with his usual talent. he dropped back to help the defense and made several mistakes which granted lithuania their better chances on goal. he came forward sloppily and his tackles were poor and he was easily beatin when defending. just wasnt his night he usually impresses and hopefully he will be better for coming italy games.
pirlo- had probably his best game with the azzurri since the world cup. despite looking a little shaky in the beggining and making a bad tackle that almost cost us a penalty he played excellently. he danced his way through the midfield with his classy style and was able to cover alot of ground with the ball at his feet he showed his excellent vision to play a ball over defenders and right to a striker his forward lobbing to beat the offside trap was excellent . dropped back to defend alot and counter attacked excellently definetly improved form his earlier performances
perrota- began the game by almost heading heading the ball home off of a corner kick unfortunately it was almost in the azzurri net. he ran alot and gave his all played a forward role and sent in his crosses well. wasnt willing to drop back and help defend he also made a couple of silly attempts on goal in which he could have passed or looked for space. better than average game with alot of pace and a real willingness to attack.
quagliarella- what a game for his first azzurri start. i didnt think he'd fit in well in a 4-1-4-1 as an attacking midfielder yet he nabbed both goals in a fantastic manner. he played well in the midfield yet i reallly think he could play a more forward role maybe as a support striker or a center forward. great game a little shaky some moments in midfield yet probly because its only his first azzurri start and his off the ball and midfield game will improve with experience.
Di natale- i still dont think he should be starting our games. a bit of a chance waster when he could pass and also a poor finisher. played okay in the midfield yet he gave the ball away to easy and needs to improve on his chances in front of goal.
inzaghi- he had a strange game because he was rarely caught offsides yet was unable to finish. helped by pirlo and quagliarella he timed his runs excellently and beat the offside trap yet his finishing was poor and he has no ability with a ball other than to tap it in. inzaghi has only two skills which have made his career and he relies on to play first his positioning when not with the ball which was excellent today he beat the offside trap and got in great positions unfortunately his only other skill, finishing was off today so he was unable to score.
gattuso- came on in the second half for de rossi to help defend. he stayed back and played his role well. combined with ambrosini to sit back and defend helped preserve our two goal lead.
del piero- definetly better than his previous game and played well during his 20 minutes on could have scored if he hadnt tried to be to fancy. juked defenders well and helped the later attacks well.
ambrosini- played defensively with gattuso in the second half the pair impressed and preserved our lead well. they slowed the pace of the game down and controlled the midfield to help keep lithuania from scoring
