as far as i know, and this is based on studying history in high school and actually paying attention that japan has a peace keeping force not more not less. as to them changing that in recent years i honestly have no clue will check it out and see if i can post a link here.

The JMSDF is just another name for the Japanese Navy. Basically after WWII the Imperial Japanese Navy was dissolved as happened to other axis countries with disarmament, but the rise of the Cold War and Russian threat meant that the US and others endorsed the Japanese being able to defend themselves with ships and subs so the JMSDF came about, along with the other JSDF (Japanese Self-Defense Forces). They have mostly conducted peacekeeping missions in line with a new reputation borne out of what happened in WWII but are very capable of defending themselves from aggression, and in more recent years have taken up more active military roles. They are heavily tied to the US still, and something of a talking point nationally, as it is part of their post-war constitution that the country is not allowed to be able to reach the military might that it once had. In the immediate years after WWII this was more relevant than it is today, many Japanese contend the constitution in terms of current relevance but I don't see Japan playing any role of aggressor in future. However, even though they are seen as anti-nuclear and more of a peace keeping force it isn't a military I would push into 'defending itself', this is a country that has a particularly strong and bloody military history, they are nuclear capable and have a large potential active service capability.

South Korea will go ahead with a planned live-fire drill on its frontline island bombarded by North Korea last month, officials here said Saturday, despite the North's stepped-up threats of further retaliations.

U.N. Security Council to meet over rising inter-Korean tension
NEW YORK, Dec. 18 (Yonhap) -- The United Nations Security Council said Saturday it has scheduled emergency closed-door consultations on the rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula for Sunday morning at Russia's request, as South Korea plans to proceed with a planned live-fire drill on its front-line island bombarded by North Korea last month.

Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said the Russian government believes the Security Council must send "a restraining signal" to North Korea and help launch diplomatic actions to resolve all disputes between North Korea and South Korea, while China, the North's key ally, also said it is firmly against any acts that could worsen already high tensions on the peninsula.

The Russians seem to be quite worried here. Interesting.

"The live-fire drill off Yeonpyeong Island will take place on Dec. 20 or 21, as previously announced, depending on weather conditions," a ranking military official in Seoul said Sunday.

Another official at the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) also said that threats from North Korea and diplomatic considerations will be ruled out in carrying out the planned live-fire exercises near the tense Yellow Sea border.

"The planned firing drill is part of the usual exercises conducted by our troops based on Yeonpyeong Island. The drill can be justifiable, as it will occur within our territorial waters," said the JCS official.

"We won't take into consideration North Korean threats and diplomatic situations before holding the live-fire drill. If weather permits, it will be held as scheduled."

The North's military appears to be making preparations for a counterattack, removing covers from coastal artillery guns and forward-deploying some artillery batteries, a military source said. In the run-up to last month's attack, the North had forward-deployed four artillery batteries and uncovered 14 coastal artillery guns.

South Korea has deployed a 7,600-ton guided-missile Aegis destroyer, the Sejong the Great, and a 4,500-ton destroyer to the Yellow Sea, while putting F-15K fighter jets on standby at an air base in the southeastern city of Daegu, officials said.

"Our military is maintaining full preparedness to respond to possible North Korean provocations while watching the North's military moves closely," said a military official, pledging to give an "immediate and strong" response in case of provocations.
