Becks: Glazer not bad for United
David Beckham has given his backing to Malcolm Glazer's controversial takeover of his former club Manchester United as he revealed that he is to open talks in the summer regarding a new contract with Real Madrid.
Glazer, who owns the franchise to Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has come in for mass protests from United supporters after seizing control of the Red Devils in a multi-million pound swoop.
But Beckham is viewing the chain of events at Old Trafford with a more open mind as he prepares for England's friendly international with Colombia in the Giants Stadium.
He believes supporters "will be okay" with what has happened to United once they are aware of all the facts and the impact that Glazer has on the club.
The England captain said: "In England the takeover of United has been a big discussion and I am sure it has been in America with how big Malcolm Glazer is out here.
"He is putting a lot of money into Manchester United. He has got a lot of shares. I think the fans have shown how they feel about Malcolm Glazer taking over the club.
"But Manchester United are a massive club, they always have been and always will be, whoever is involved.
"They will always have the best players. They have got a great manager in Sir Alex Ferguson and they have got someone now with the backing of the amount of money and shares Malcolm Glazer has got taking over the club.
"I am sure the fans will be okay with it when they know what is actually happening and when something is said about it.
"It would probably be unfair for me to comment too much on it but it can't be too much of a bad thing for Manchester United because they are a massive club."
Meanwhile, Beckham has dispelled speculation regarding a move back to England this summer - he has been linked with Arsenal - by insisting he is willing to open talks regarding a new contract with Real.
He said: "There has been a lot of talk about me moving back to England from the day I signed for Real Madrid. I have always said Real Madrid is one of the biggest clubs in the world and I am happy there.
"People have said nearly every week that there are rumours about me coming back to England. But I am happy at Real Madrid. I want to finish my career there.
"That is the end of that. I have got two years left of my contract. Talks have not started yet with Madrid (over a new contract) but maybe in July they will start. I will be staying there."
Beckham will be opening his own football academy in Los Angeles after the conclusion of England's mini tour to follow on from the one launched recently in London.
He said: "It is important because it has always been a dream of mine to have a soccer academy, firstly in London. I never dreamt I would have one opening in LA.
"For kids in Los Angeles and in America, especially girls, soccer is a massive thing. Up to a certain age kids love playing soccer. I think when the kids go into college, I don't know what happens.
"It is not too much about cracking America, it is about giving the kids the opportunity to be able to go to a soccer academy like mine in LA.
"Of course, if it produces new stars, if it produces the new Mia Hamm (American female superstar player), then it is special and it has worked. If it works, then great. I would love it to work."
