Premier league clubs angling for the league shield are in for a hard fight against 2003 champions, Enyimba of Aba, who have taken a two point lead in the seven week old competition.

The African champions, who are very serious in their quest to reclaim the title they lost to Dolphin of Port Harcourt last season, have, on three occasions gone ahead to claim the diadem once they take hold of the top position.

Last season, they came second on the table, a position, which many league watchers attributed to their unimpressive beginning on the competition. The Aba team had to fight from the eight position towards the end of the competition, but then, it was already too late for them to dislodge Dolphins of Port Harcourt.

Yet, they only lost their table on the last day of the league, after Dolphin's emphatic victory over Iwuanyanwu Nationale in Port Harcourt had kept the Rivers boys two points ahead of the peoples elephant.

This weekend, the Okey Emordi-led team are away to Nassarawa United in Lafia in a match they want to win to leave other teams still gropping on their trial.

Speaking with The Guardian at the Aba Stadium shortly after his side's 4-0 victory over Simba Star of Tanzania in the CAF Champions league, Coach Emordi declared Enyimba's intention to win the league championship to add to the Super Cup they win early this year, and the FA Cup and the champions league titles to win to annex.

Emordi said their game plan was to win as many away matches as possible, given fair officiating, as they were sure of getting all the points available in their home matches.

According to Emordi, "we would have won the league last year but for some things that happened towards the end of the competition. This year, we are taking chances with my club no matter how weak they may look. We are going for every point available so that no matter how some desperate teams try to manipulate the competition we will still be at the top."
Enyimba defeated Kano Pillars 3-0 in a rescheduled match played Wednesday to continue their unbeaten run in the competition.

Apart from being the team with the highest number of goals (alongside Lobi Stars), Enyiba's defence is also very miserly with goals, having considered only one goal and scoring eleven.

The strength of Enyimba's rear will be put to a sermon test this weekend when they play against tenth placed Nasarawa United in Lafia.

This is one of the matches that will Indicate if the African champions can go through the first half of the season undefeated.

Second-placed Lobi Starts, who have been in top scoring from this season, travel to Minna to guests to drowning Tornadoes in a match their chairman, Dominic Lorfa, says, will help them wrestle the top position from Enyinba.

Lobi, like Enyinba, have been very prolific in goal scoring, with eleven goals in six matches, and only six against. Against a Tornadoes side that have lost four matches, and won only one, it will be a big surprise if Ndidi Anumnu and his team mates fail to short down Torndadoes I this match.

Kwara United, who have been keeping abreast of the leaders, are quests to Gombe United in a match that may change the status of either team on the league table.

Kwara United is third on the table, while Gombe occupies the sixth position, but only one points separates both teams. Kwara have 11 points, to Gombe's 10, which remains victory for Gombe will increase their points to 13, while Kwara will remain on 11. But should Kwara United pull an away victory, they will climb to 14 points, and possibly, drive Enyinba away from the top. That's is of the Aba boys get anything less than a victory in Lafia.

Shooting Stars of Ibadan are scheduled to host Iwuanyanwu Nationale in a match that may bring Dick memories of the epic clash of both sides at the same venue in 1986.

In that match, 3SC led 3-0 for a better part of the tie, but Nationale later rolled out their ??? to pull an amazing draw with their hosts. They scored three goals with less than fifteen minutes of play left.

Although both teams are no longer than ????? they were in the 80's, they are expected to put up a thrilling performance on their quest to win the points, and maintain their mid-table positions.

Lagos side, NPA, will host Insurance of Benin, who only last Wednesday defeated 3SC to record their tenth point in the chase for the league crown.

But against an NPA side, which wants to do better than they did last term it may be a Herculean task for the Benin boys. On paper, although Insurance last week qualified for the last preliminary round of the confederation cup, the best they can hope for today is a draw.

Kano Pillars will host Wikki Tourists at the Sani Abacha Stadium, while struggling new comers, Sharks of Port Harcourt and Gateway of Abeokuta will settle their differences at the liberation stadium, Port Harcourt tomorrow.

Other matches include Julius Berger against Rangers at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, the Aba clash between Gabros and defending champions, Dolphin of Port Harcourt, and the northern battle between hosts, Zamfara United and El Kanemi of Maiduguri.

For those of you who may not remember, take your minds back to the rivalry thread, I mentioned Enugu Rangers and Shooting Stars...

    I'll indicate when they play.

I was born and raised in Benin City meanwhile, so by default I support Bendel Insurance.

Another round of matches played this weekend, and it's like they were right about Enyimba.
They got all 3 points again and have streteched their lead slightly.

Enyimba were not involved in the weekend's action because of their continental engagement, but they have a 4 point gap with a game in hand...

Looking like it's business as usual...

Super Eagles goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama will make his first domestic league start in nearly half a year when Iwuanyanwu Nationale take on high-flying Kano Pillars at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri.

"Enyeama has been registered and will be in the starting line-up," new coach Stanley Eguma told KICK OFF on Friday. "He has been brilliant in training and I am confident he can translate that form to our matches."

Enyeama himself is ready for the test. "I have kept in shape throughout and I have no problems at all."

With Nationale desperatley looking to put points on the board, Eguma will also be putting his faith in what is essentially and Enyimba backbone to his side. "Romanus Orjinta will be playing and John Ofomba has just been registered too so he will come."

But there is still no place for Malta returnee Michael Ochei, whose international transfer is still being sorted out.

Pillars hammered crisis-ridden Insurance 4-1 in midweek, and Eguma is understandably keen to puncture the confidence of the northern aristocrats and has warned his wards that it is time to stand up and be counted.

"I have told them that they have to shape up or be ready to be shipped out. Nationale is a big club in Nigeria and they have to realise that. We have to return the club to its past glory and anybody who is not ready to apply himself will be shown the way out.

"Pillars beat Insurance 4-1, and they will be coming here with a lot of confidence. We have to make sure we get the points from that game."

IF the performances of young Nigerians in the European leagues in the last two weeks is anything to go by, sceptics and doubting Thomases about the future of the Super Eagles with the imminent retirement of the big actors on stage in nearest future can go and sleep.

These young players are learning, and they are doing so fast. By their recent feats, they are ready to step into the big shoes, wherever there is a vacuum. Take Peter Utaka for instance, the junior brother of Super Eagles forward John Utaka. He made the headline penultimate week when he scored a goal for his Belgian club Westerlo in their 2-3 defeat by Aliu Mohammed Mons Bergen.

Last weekend, the junior Utaka was also on song in Westerlo's 2-2 draw with Belgian giant Anderlect. He scored in the 19th minute to cancel Anderlect's lead. Utaka who began his professional career abroad with Dynamo Zagreb of Croatia ran rings in the Anderlect defence and provided the assist that gave his club the second goal. The match ended 2-2.

In Ukraine, another future Eagles star Emmanuel Okoduwa, the striker of the Abuja 2003 All Africa Games U-23 team was arrowhead of Arsenal Kyiv's 3-0 defeat of Kryvbas. Okoduwa who has donned the Eagles shirt once, scored twice in the game.

The six-footer's first goal against Kryvbas which has another Nigerian, Tony Alegbe in its line up, came in 77th minute, while the second goal came in the 79th minute.

Though he did not score in Inter Milan's 2-0 defeat of Siena, Obafemi Martins got a standing ovation from Inter fans offer the match which was played at San Siro Stadium. Martins has scored 18 goals this season, the highest by any Nigerian in Europe this season.

Martins' first attempt at goal in the first minute of the game resulted in a penalty because of a foul by Siena goalkeeper Alex Manninger. The penalty was well taken by Argentine forward Julio Cruz, which gave Inter the first goal.

All through the match, Martins kept Manninger busy as he made brilliant saves to deny the Nigerian his 19th goal of the season. Martins continued to torment Siena defenders until he was substituted in the second half by Lafe Adriano.

Sam Sodje, Brentford free scoring central half also scored last week in Brentford 2-4 defeat by Enoch Showunmi Luton Town. Sodje scored his eighth goal of the season in the 21st minute, while Showunmi scored Luton's fourth goal on the dot of 90th minute " six minutes after he came in as substitute.

Ayo Makinwa also in action for Atalanta in their club's 1-2 loss to Udinese. The pacy forward whose signature is being sought by Serie A giants such as Inter, AC Milan, Juventus and Roma, could not score his seventh goal of the season as Udinese defenders close-marked him.

Relatively known Adebayo Akinfenwa was on song for Torquay in their 2-0 defeat of Blackpool in the English Nationwide League. The 22 year-old Nigerian scored the curtain raiser in the 16th minute. He was given a loud ovation when he was substituted in the 72nd minute of the game.

However disturbing is the news that Eagles young prodigy Kazeem Atanda Yusuf a.k.a. Ayila was not listed in Dynamo Keiv when they hosted and defeated Dnipro 2-0. Christian Obodo was equally missing in Fiorentina line-up against AC Milan.

But the news that John Mikel Obi has signed for Manchester United makes up for this little dent on the record of Nigerian youths in Europe last week.

Obi, a member of the Finland 2003 U-17 World Cup, was signed from Lynn of Oslo, Norway. Manchester United beat Premiership rival Chelsea to the Obi's signature. With his move to Theatre of Dream, Obi has joined Nigerian greats who played for great clubs.

They are Taribo West, AC Milan and Inter-Milan; Obafemi Martins, Inter-Milan; Emmanuel Amunike and Gbenga Okunowo, FC Barcelona; Celestine Babayaro, Chelsea; Victor Ikpeba, Monaco; Kanu Nwankwo, Inter-Milan and Arsenal; Finidi George, Real Betis; Victor Agali, Schalke 04 and a few others.

So much for the youth, now to the oldies. Eagles captain Austin Okocha fell flat with Bolton Wanderers as Chelsea defeated it 2-0 at the Reebok Stadium to end the 50 years of drought.

Okocha who was substituted in the 63rd minute later accused the London players of cheating their way to the title. And in Birmingham, Eagles striker Kanu Nwankwo and his West Brom mates were handed the relegation ticket by his former club Arsenal.

Thanks to two goals by Van Persie and Edu, Arsenal maintained their second position on the Premiership table. Kanu came in the second half, but he was not the great player we used to know. Arsene Wenger, Arsenal manager said shortly before the match that Kanu may not be in his best form now, because of age, but it cannot be denied that he was a great player in the time past.

Last weekend was a weekend of 2-0 defeat for Eagles stars in the Premiership as Yakubu Aiyegbeni's Portmouth fell by the same to margin to Manchester City. Yakubu whose future in Postmouth has been talk of the town for months could not find his feet in the game.

Postmouth's new manager Alain Perin is already thinking of future without Aiyegbeni, he told the media in England over the weekend: "I don't know, only the chairman can give an answer. But it will be difficult replacing Yakubu".

"But if we get good money for him, we can get another striker. The club wants to keep him, but the player may want to play for a big club," said Perin.

Joseph Yobo was also a victim of 2-0 defeat as Everton was sent back from London to Liverpool with 2-0 defeat by West Londoner Fulham. Yobo was, however, impressive in defeat.

Celestine Babayaro gave another reason why Eagles' handlers should not invite him again. He was missing in action in Newcastle goalless draw with Crystal Palace. Shola Ameobi who started for Newcastle was substituted in the 63rd minute.

Seyi Olofinjana, Super Eagles defensive midfielder was on for 90 minutes in Wolves 2-1 defeat of Reading away from home. And in Germany, another Seyi, this time Olajengbensi was in Freiburg line-up against Sunday Oliseh's Borussia Dortmund.

Olajengbesi who just returned from a career threatening injury was substituted in the 64 minute. The match ended 2-2.

Ade Adebola scored in Coventry City 6-2 defeat of Derby County. Daniel Shittu was equally impressive in Queens Park Rangers 2-1 defeat of Nottingham Forest. Ogbonna Kanu played for 90 minutes in Peterborough 0-3 at home loss to Sola Oyeleke's M.K. Dons.

It was a great weekend for the younger Eagles and vice versa for the oldies.

Former Enyimba players, Michael Ochei, Romanus Orjinta, Chibuzor Ozurumba, Ndidi Anumnu and Vincent Enyeama, who now ply their trade in the colours of Iwuanyanwu Nationale, have vowed to wreck the African champions in tomorrow's Week 13 Premier League match scheduled for Aba Township Stadium.

The players were part of Enyimba's successes in the African Champions League in 2003 and last year before leaving for Nationale, and those of them who left the club with hard feelings believe the match is a good time to balance the books.

Speaking with journalists shortly after Nationale's 1-0 victory over Sharks on Wednesday, Ozurumba, who left the Aba side last year, sees the match as an opportunity to show Enyimba supporters that the coaches were wrong in giving him only a bit part role while he was with them.

Ozurumba said although he had nothing against anybody in Enyimba, "this match presents a very good opportunity for me to shame my detractors, who did not see anything good in me in Enyimba. Enyimba, no doubt, has a good team but this is our chance to show that we are also big in the game. We have been going about our business with this game in mind and now that it is here, the only thing I can tell our fans is to come out en masse to see what we will do in Aba."

Toeing the same line, Orjinta, who captained Enyimba to the CAF Champions League victory in 2003 before leaving for a short professional stint in Norway, said he was in Owerri to help Nationale regain their lost glory, adding that now that they have pitched against the 'Peoples Elephant' past affiliations would not stop him from doing his work, which includes helping Iwuanyanwu to beat Enyimba. "The fact that I played for Enyimba does not stop me from helping my present club to beat them. If anything, this match is an opportunity to show my fans that I am still Orjinta since everybody regards Enyimba as the best team in Africa. I assure you that we now have the quality to shock Enyimba, even in Aba.''

For Michael Ochei, who had a brief stay in Malta before returning to join Nationale, the match against Enyimba will not only be a battle for three points, but it will also determine whether the Aba team is the best in Nigeria. Having played for Enyimba and helping them to win the Champions League, Ochei says he knows the team inside out and will use that knowledge to Nationale's advantage tomorrow.

Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, was more reserved in his comments on the match, describing it as just one match out of the 38 matches teams have to play in a season. "Enyimba is a team I have enormous respect for. I was there and I know how much the team prepares for matches. Aside that, they have a lot of quality players who have seen everything in the local scene. But that does not mean they will beat us. We are going there to fight for three points, and I assure our fans that we wouldn't disappoint them."

African champions Enyimba remain the only undefeated side after another stunning performance on Sunday.

The Aba team, who played at home, defeated rivals Iwuanyanwu Nationale 3-0 to top the table with 28 points.

After 12 matches, Enyimba lead by a four-point margin. Gombe United, in second place, are one of the surprise teams of the season.

But they failed to close the gap on the leaders, after losing 1-0 to Shooting Stars of Ibadan.

Rangers International of Enugu are third on 23 points but have two games in hand.

Dolphins of Port Harcourt, the reigning champions, also have two games in hand but are sixth.

Enyimba extended their lead in the premier league to seven points after beating Enugu Rangers 1-0 in the weekend's only match.

Substitute Hakeem Oduwole scored a late winner as Kwara United notched a 1-0 home win over African champions Enyimba.

The defeat which was the second this season, has allowed the chasing pack to cut Enyimba's lead in the premier league to four points.

Gombe United are second after beating Kano Pillars 2-1 at home but had to come from a goal down and Bala Manu scored the winner with just five minutes left.

Shooting Stars won 1-0 away at Gateway to stay third, one point behind Gombe and five off the lead.

League leaders Enyimba suffered only their third defeat of the season, losing 2-1 to lowly Gabros United.

Enyimba remain top and Enugu Rangers failed to close the gap in them after losing 2-0 at Kwara United.

Rangers finished the game with 10 men after defender Andrew Nwordu was sent-off.

Nwordu has also been banned for four matches after he attacked the referee.

Rangers are second with 33 points, four behind Enyimba while Gombe United third on 31.

In another disciplinary matter Iwuanyanwu Nationale will play their next three home games away from home turf after crowd trouble in their 1-1 draw with Gateway.

As of today, five teams can win the 2005 Nigerian Premier League title: Enyimba (66 from 34), Rangers (60 from 34), Iwuanyanwu (57 from 35), Sharks (54 from 34), and Gombe (54 from 34).

However, this number drops to two once Enyimba gets a single point from their remaining four games (Enyimba and Rangers).

That is because Iwuanyanwu, Sharks and Gombe can only garner a maximum of 66 points after 38 games (if they win out). This means a photo-finish for the continental spots - because Rangers is not guaranteed second place (if they do not pass Enyimba). Rangers can get a maximum of 72 points if they win out, and Enyimba 76.

Therefore, the title is Enyimba's to lose.

(Dolphin is 11th, has played 32 with 46 points so far, and can only finish with 64 points if they win out).
