Football fans have different opinions regarding Nicola Legrottaglie but the thing that has made him deserves a place in top class football again, in my opinion, is his spirit and stubbornness to prove himself once again and he's succeeded in his mission thus far.
He also happens to be the only person in our squad (except Buffon) who can organise the defence while on the pitch.

Chiellini may be more high profile, but Nicola is the real leader of our back line.

he certainly is much calmer than Chiellini. Which is expected of a experienced CB.

if only he could have shown this from when he came from Chievo.

I love how you write on the forums, Ahmed. It's like you're writing a long and drawn out masterpiece of a fairytale.
This is my style, even in Arabic by the way.

Nicola has already started to convince me as a leader, but I see that Stendardo - if we complete signing him - would be our future defence leader. Fingers crossed.

Because I think the board will feel that with Legrottaglie, Chiellini, Andrade and Mellberg will be sufficient.

The big question is how Andrade will be when he recovers. If he is back to his best, we are probably fine at CB. The trouble is that we won't truly know how he is until the season starts.

If we could get a few million for Andrade and sign Stendardo, I would definitely do it but I doubt anyone will be willing to buy Andrade before he has proved his fitness.

I reckon that the asking price is a wee bit steep, but could probably be lowered.

That may be so but whenever I find myself pleased with Legrotaglie this year, that Fiorentina penalty pops into the mind and I'm depressed again. Even if it is an isolated incident, I don't want the leader of defense doing such blunders. Legrotaglie's position as starter should not be guaranteed next season.

Why shouldn't we sign Stendardo?

Because we'll be stuck with:
Legrottaglie, Chiellini, Andrade, Stendardo, Mellberg

That is 5 CBs, more than sufficient in terms of numbers, meaning that the big name CB (Zapata, Santacroce, Garay, Carvalho, etc.) we all want, won't come.

Andrade is likely out until the beginning of next season, meaning we are stuck with him. Stendardo would be our sub CB. That means that Chiellini and Legro or Mellberg would be our starting pair.

Imagine,

Rooney---Tevez VS. Legro---Chiellini

Eto'o---Messi VS. Mellberg---Chiellini

Pato---Dinho---Kaka VS. Legro---Chiellini

It's been nice Stendardo, byebye.

thats like saying every time you think Del Piero has been great, you remember his penalty miss against Roma.

No-ones starting place should be guaranteed, but someone else has to step up and prove they can do better.

Craka, well said. People are so easily impressed, wants to sign him and one even goes as far as "future defence leader" just for a couple of decent games of doing his job in the defence unit. No showstopping stuff, just doing the job to ok standards as a backup is expected to (why he was loaned, he acheived his task, Mellberg is coming to do moe of that, bye bye now).

Stendardo is an average backup player, and one who is bizzarely enough has a pricey tag (why I have no idea, he was a bench player in Lazio too, they only signed a new contract with him to sell him, and we advertised him for them decently enough). We do not need to keep him at all when we have a whole defence who are mainly the quality of average backup defenders for the standard of top football. We need a bonafide top CB, and not waste 6m pounds on average ones.

We are supposed to aim higher then Legro who has served us well this season due to our emergency, and we already have free decent backup CB in Mellberg and eternally injured Andrade. They should be squad players, and Chiellini should get a Top competent CB to partner him (either wise we wont survive next season, we have tactical defensive unit, but very poor quality in individual defensive talent).

Basically get a quality CB like Zapata or perhaps even an established one for the limited funds we have, and not waste anything by signing surplus ones like Stendardo for 6m pounds...
