The Hague - The debate in parliament over the sending of troops to Afghanistan has evoked annoyed reactions from the United States. Prime minister Balkenende has reassured the public that foreign opinions will have no value in this national discussion
Paul Bremer, former American ambassador to the Netherlands who is currently playing an important role in Iraq, was the first instrument of the American government to make noise, stating; "The Netherlands need to realise the United States of America have a significant influence in the Dutch economy"
Similar dressed-up threats were used by a White House spokesman, who declared that; "This is an issue affecting us all and a negative decision by the Dutch parliament could very well result into serious negative consequences for Dutch society on various fronts"
It seems our national sovereignity is once again completely overruled by a nation claiming to be our ally.
