No they wouldn't have: the Dutch were never interested in colonising and imposing language, culture and religion. Trade was all that mattered. That's why the people of Indonesia (for example) don't speak Dutch.

Italian striker Christian Vieri has completed his move from Milan to Monaco.

The 32-year-old had been targeted by Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, although the Ligue 1 outfit rapidly emerged as favourites to clinch his signature.

A statement issued via the Rossoneri's official website declared: "AC Milan [have] traded Christian Vieri to AS Monaco.

"The player will be in Monaco tomorrow morning [Tuesday] to take physical tests and he will then sign a contract with the new club."
