It is a complex question but I do not believe it is about the weapons either. Sure…, if you get a person who is mentally ill and violent a gun he will use it in a non “good” way. But look at all the people in for example Sweden or Canada that hunts. They all have guns. But they would not ever think about using them other then in the right purpose. In this case hunting.

So it all comes down to segregation and values.

Ps. Scenario: Two boys are robbing a Seven11. The kids are 18 years old. If they get caught they get one month in prison as a first time felony. They rob the place then get the hell out of there.

Bundy, Dalmer, Gasey, kazynski, Bin Laden. Those are specific cases in which high punishment is needed. Im not saying that you get fifty years for robbing a gas station. Im just saying that punishment should fit the crime. Society does rule people, in some cases but in a lot of cases society doesnt rule people. No one makes you decide to watch a baseball game instead of soccer. You have a choice, sure where you come from has something to do with it but ultimately a person makes the choice. I do understand what you say about societal pressure and all. you should definitly check out Native Son by Richard Wright. I think you would love it if you already dont.

This is my point exactly. You do not have a choice on a sub conical level.
I have had many long nightly discussions about this. Sure in a sense way you have a choice. But in real life your choices are based on what you have learned thru out life. If you would been raised up living 25 years in a small black box you wouldn’t be able to do that choice. Read: environment.

I am working with a young man at the moment. He is 17 yrs. old, black, and from a good family with both parents present in the home. He was driving around with some friends and saw three men walking up the road. This kid told the driver to turn around and pull up to the 3 guys. Then he had the bright idea to jump out with a gun and rob the guys. This is his first offense. He will probably serve 4.5 to 5 years in prison. With this offense there is no chance of probation and my state has phased out parole. The kid did make a choice. He told police that he was just sick of never having enough money to buy the shit he wanted.

Does 5 years seem like a long time? Yes, but not if you consider the terror of the 3 victims and the irreparable psychological effects on those guys.

For some unknown reason, possibly due to my insomnia, I was watching an episode of "Cops" a few nights ago, and they did a prostitution sting operation using a female cop.

The perp that they caught was this 65 year old man who was looking for a hummer. Now, I realize that prostitution is illegal in most of the world, however, this poor guy was old, obviously lonely, and may have been in poor health.

All this guy wanted was to get his knob polished. Now, he very easily could have taken that 20 dollars, loaded up on cheap booze, got into his car and may have killed himself or innocent victims in the process. Yet, selling alcohol is purely legal.

That's an interesting one Serge. I think I tend towards the Dutch/Belgian model of legalising that stuff. I'm not sure how morally wrong it really is. I suspect some of the attitudes towards it come from Catholic values.

My theory on it John, is that save for Las Vegas, Prostitution is not government regulated.

However, due to the extreme right in the White House, it will never be legalized.

Now, I'm not here to be a proponent or opponent of legalizing it, I just find it baffling sometimes that Alcohol, which can kill you or others a lot easier than a blowjob, is perfectly OK.

I'm always baffled about the attitudes to cannibas too. I don't do any of that sort of stuff, but I don't see why it's some terrible thing to smoke some pot when people regularly get out of their head on alcohol and either kill someone in a car accident or beat on their wife, or whatever.

That's some of it. On the other hand, I think a lot of it is tradition. Booze has always been legal, so you can't ban it. People won't accept that. But something new, sure you can market that as evil and the sheep will accept a ban as perfectly normal and right.
