My definition of a glory hunter is a fan who says he "supports" a club or country while in reality he doesn't...he has other clubs or countries that he cares about, has switched alliances before in the past, and cannot stay objective when talking about his new found "love." The latter case is perhaps the most important of the lot. The only reason he likes the team is because they win...and you can decifer that fact just by examining the way he talks about the team and how objective he remains. Being a supporter of a club means upholding the traditions and values of the club while not accepting anything that goes against those good values.

What separates me from an average gloryhunter? I have only been a fan of one club, I stay objective when talking about issues involving the club, I prefer to uphold and expect the traditions of the club, and I support my own Nation's National Team first and foremost before anything else. Hope that is what you're looking for, and I know people have different opinions on this matter and are always skepticle of non-Italians supporting a club like Juventus.

Thats exactly what i wanted andy, different views on what makes a glory hunter are interesting...

Couple of comments...

You say "while in reality he doesnt"... How do you know... what draws you to that conclusion...

Where is your limit on switching alliances... Eg. a child brought up being taken to the club of their father every week... Is that person a glory hunter when they make their own choice and switch teams ?
Maybe a teenager switchs alliances throughout his childhood but stays with their final choice forever... is that a glory hunter ?

you say he only likes ateam because they win, but then when did you start supporting juve, was it during a slum or a successful period ? if the latter, is that not the same ?

Surely you can only really tell a glory hunter by their reaction when the club is suffering... Something i believe most here have never experienced... so can you be sure ?

etc etc

Erik, for some reason that description your friend gave talking with Americans about Holland seems to pop up a lot in European critiques of our Nation. There always seems to be some mention of Americans not knowing about countries such as Holland or Belarus, and I just find that appalling. I don't know what idiots your friend was talking to, however it's strange because all the people I hang out with have indeed heard of places like Holland. You have to be an idiot to not have heard of Holland...even Kanye West knows about AmsterDAM.
Ah but its mostly the generation before you.

95% of all Juve fans are glory hunters imo. Why else would someone support a club that they have no connection to, no affiliation with. You are supporting a club that isnt 'yours' so Ill never really take that seriously.

As for supporting another nation, well.. thats just retarded. But then again im obnoxious.

I don't really see why you would support any other nation but the one you are attached closest too as well but I'm Dutch.

What about people from, say, Liechtenstein? What are they gonna do when watching the World Cup?

What do you mean by the club is not yours ? why is the club not mine ?

I agree on your view of supporting another nation
I dont know, im not sure what to think on it. To me your team is your local team, your city team. Fair enough you might like some other teams for various reasons but its retarded to be born/live in London and support MU etc. Its a city thing, just like its a national thing.

Then again there are other reasons, other connections and well it dosent really matter. Anyone can support anyone, its your choice. But what im sure about is Andy and about every other member here have no place calling anyone a glory hunter when they just so happen to support the most successful team in Italy for no apparent reason.

That is a very common opinion... Cant really disagree with that...

but then of course... what about family connections to another team / city etc...

Yes... Didn't nearly care as much though. I ended up rooting for England because I lived in England at the time of the last World Cup. See, it all just gets much more exiting if you pick a team and stick with it.

Personally, i quite like watching games where i dont really care who wins... Supporting england is often very bad for my heart

A wise choice :D

Agreed, But then your talking about a prefered team, you follow, not a team you actually support... you wouldnt really be bothered if they lost...

Some people actually say they support anotherr nation than their own... that i dont understand

Oohh join the club. Up until Euro2004, the words "penalty kick" directly sent me into a state of shock

That's true, I agree.

all my friends were milan fans and i figured it would be no fun to be a milan fan as well so i became a juve fan, too young to know what a glory hunter was

What I mean in reality is the fan does not really care about the club unless it's winning, therefore he doesn't actually care for the club. This also has to do with not caring about the traditions of the club, etc.

It depends really. If the first child grew up attending Hellas matches with his father and then decided to switch to Inter during adulthood that could be considered a case of glory hunting. If a child keep switching clubs during childhood he probably doesn't have any father figure directing him to any club, so it is up to his own discretion...if continues to switch clubs when he is more mature I would certainly question it.

Biggest case of gloryhunting would be following Juventus up to 2003 then switching to Milan just cuz they won the CL...that is pathetic.

you say he only likes ateam because they win, but then when did you start supporting juve, was it during a slum or a successful period ? if the latter, is that not the same ?
I first started to like Juve in 1998 after I watched the CL Final with Real Madrid....that was the first European club match I ever saw. I loved watching Zidane in that specifc match and because I did not really know much about club football from 98 until 2000 Juventus just stuck with me as the team I first saw. I did not become a hardcore fan until about 2000 and for some reason I became even more of a fan when we lost Zidane, my favorite absolute player.

As for Juve successes in that period...I'm sure you know Paul. When we lost Zidane I thought the world was going to end. :D

Surely you can only really tell a glory hunter by their reaction when the club is suffering... Something i believe most here have never experienced... so can you be sure ?
Interesting...your probably right. The real supporters will stick with their club through thick and thin, and it would be a true test for Juventini if Juventus indeed go through a bad spell. If worse comes to worst and the Elkann brothers somehow fail to keep the club successful after the Triade leaves office, we could see an unsuccessful era ahead of us....anything is possible.

I recall a lot of Samp supporters discussing their feelings after their Era "D'Oro" ended in the 90's and how they have stuck with their club all the way to this day...inspiring stuff I suppose.
