Scott Parker would provide more grit and ball winning skills in midfield, however I prefer a player like Carrick who is better with the ball and a good passer.

As for Beckham being included, I'm not so sure. Yes, he gives you the freekick element that could decide a few games, however I would rather let SWP play and completely dominate both flanks with speed and precision. Freekicks are indeed important however you have JoeCole and Gerrard who can take them rather well. Beckham just does not have much going for him when I look at the alternative SWP.

Its not jus about fk's he gives so much more... look at our games with and without him... the difference is massive... SWP allthough exciting is often completely inneffective... hes either great or non existent... Prime example being wednesday... when he was getting perfect pass after perfect pass from becks and not once got to the byline... he was owned by their leftback... becks may not be exciting but good or bad he makes a contribution, the same cannot be said for SWP.... Not too mention SWP isnt a great crosser either... if he doesnt cut inside hes out of options

Im not gonna argue with you about becks, I know what you feel about him...

Anyway... I see no real dificulty in fitting both in the team

After watching Rooney in Portugal I believe he could take the front role and excel at it. With the strong presence on both wings and Lampard behind him, there is a lot of room for movement and the interchange of positions. Rooney has all the skill he needs to play up top, and I remember him causing France a lot of problems by challenging them on the brink of offsides. Or you could put Owen up top but there goes the whole system cuz you need to fit Rooney in the team.

Dont really see how you come to that... Hes only played up top on his own once for england (wales on sat) and was awful...
Hes also played alone up front for manu on 3 (might be 4 ?) occasions and failed then too...

England and Spain should make it to the world cup for the simple reason that both nations are at least always attempting to play attacking football (which, to me as a Dutchman, equals entertaining football). We've already got Brazil there and Holland just need to finish packing their suitcases --> attacking football is already well-represented but the playing field should grow with such teams if the entire tournament is gonna be worth watching.

Did you happen the catch the game against Northern Ireland? I have to say that Beckham's passes were the only real threat coming from England. With a pass like that, you simply have to be in the team, no doubt about that. Besides, whether you like it or not, he's still the heart and soul of the English national team.

I guess you didn't get the GIST of my post Paul. I omitted the other sections not because I didn't want to address them but because YES Itlay and England's record in those tournaments are the same and lacklustre...that said, two finals (one lost in PK and other other in stoppage time) and a semi-final lost in PK is enough to warrant Italy to be on a level above England who has not reached the final four in 15 years.

Hi all, got a letter from a friend of mine who went to study in San Francisco in August (till January) and I felt like sharing; given there are some Americans on these boards. It's a good read

Got laid? (he seems to think sex and feeling good are intertwined) You know I always try not to generalise but the Americans I've met so far are making it all very, very hard. I have yet to meet anyone who's familiar with the concept of a country in Europe named "Holland" and for some reason they keep on asking me what "State" I'm from because they can't recognise my accent. I don't get that, you know I don't actually *have* an accent... (he does and it's quite Dutch but he's convinced he doesn't and it's cute so I leave him living that illusion) And still, even if I were to have an accent (which I obviously don't); is it so hard to imagine there are other countries besides America? (not sure what he meant by that - I think they told him his accent is non-american but then continued to ask him what state he's from). I think that, if we want to be noticed as a country by these people, we have to start playing one of their dodgy sports that I still fail to understand despite trying. Although I doubt they would let us participate in their World Championships (or was it World Series?), which are strictly American regardless of their names.

They are all very nice though. Kind of naive (but maybe that's a very Dutch thing to say; they would probably tell us we're pessimists), but nice. And if you can look past their paranoia and seeming emotional dependency on conspiracy-theories; studying politics and media in this country isn't too bad. Do you remember how we used to get annoyed when we saw Americans on Dutch television, shouting things along the lines of "God bless America, the greatest country on the planet" and stuff? Well there really are *a lot* of them who believe that, but in their defence; most of them have never actually left their nation, often not even their own state so they can be excused.

More than anything, this country is just easy. The schools are easy, I barely have to study at all. Their driving tests are easy --> I had to do one because insurance would be insanely high if I wanted to buy a car with my European license and all I had to do was drive a circle on a parking lot, basically. And the girls are easy too; none of them have that (extreme?) sense of pride you often find in Dutch girls.

At least they don't complain about things they can't change anyway, like the weather and shit. That is really something the Dutch need to stop doing. Their food is generally good (although this nation lacks a real cuisine), their coffee, however, is appalling. I don't know how they drink it. Remember when we once fell off that ship in that polluted river and accidentally swallowed some water - that's what it tastes like. I swear!

Well talk to you soon buddy, gotta go. I've been invited to a baseball match (or was it basketball?) and apparently I have to buy one of those helmets with beer cans and straws on the sides otherwise I won't be let into the stadium (sounds almost Dutch, doesn't it? "Bring your cannabis or go home").

Erik, I just thought of this - that the coffee in America is not appalling. It's not great, but it'll do. Now then, in my opinion, Spain had the best coffee I ever had. Not just in Madrid at one particular bar either, it was great everywhere, every day, no matter the venue. Viva Espana.

What type of coffee are we talking about here Roberto? Perc. coffee? espresso?? While places like Starbucks are really over-rated and even joints like Peet's coffee is still basically Dunkin Donuts coffee with a different aroma and snotty artsy self-labeled barista's we have some decent places for coffee..but then again it depends...good espresso is harder to come by especially if you live in middle america while perc. coffee can be quite good in some Mom-and-Pop "coffee and pie" places.
