No Finno-ugric is a pretty weird family. Finnish and Hungarian belong to it despite being hundreds of miles apart and they form a separate category from Indo-European languages. So maybe it's the Estonians who fall into the same category.

i have been taught that finland has a category of its own

yeah, i think so. their language is rather similar to finnish. on the other hand, latter is similar (for me at least) to swedish, norwegian and any other bar english/german/french (forgot how that group is called)
Finnish is not similar to Swedish/Norwegian/Danish/Icelandic

I seemed to recall that Estonian belonged to it too but I now am not sure anymore.

But what Donnie said.
I heard that too about Estonian, but I asked about it and it seems that Estonians understand jacksh*t from Finnish or Hungarian

I think the same goes for Hungarians and Finns, but the origin remains the same. Finnish apparently has 17 declensions.
