Well it wouldnt feel like a petals would it?
No, the kevlar type vests worn today normally will have a stab plate in the front and in the back, to prevent stabbings. Hence the name.

But as for "hurt," the size, shape and velocity will all come into affect.

9mm, .45, .40 whether they be Full Metal Jacketed rounds, or soft points, or hollow points. The soft and hollow points would not "hurt" as much since they are less aerodynamic and tend to break up easier upon impact.

No matter what type of round is caught by the kevlar, the very least you are looking at is a very bad bruise, and at least one or two broken ribs.

Now Vinnie mentioned the Armalite type 15 rifle (AR-15), that fires a 5.56 mm NATO spec. round, I am not too sure if they would not actually penetrate. I am positive that they would penetrate the vest if they are the "green tips." They are Ballistic rounds with a full metal jacket, and a solid steel core.

The military here uses those as a kind of infantrymen's armor-piercing round. They are made for the new HBAR 1 in 12 twist barrels used on the new M-16's. They will, without the use of a better word, fuck you up.
