I was a big Gianni Bugno & Claudio Chiappucci fan back in the day but Indurin's dominance made me get bored with the sport but Pantani's amazing 98 victories lit the fire again for cycling...I have respect for Armstrong but most of our fellow countrymen don't realize how difficult it is racing in the Giro as well (which Armstrong does not do).

Let me ask you guys this question.
What is it about Lance Armstrong that most people hate?
Is it because he's dominated the Tour De France for the last 5 years? Is it because he's American?? (Not trying to start a fire here, as I wouldn't be surprised in the least if that was the reason why.)
Personally, I find his story very inspirational, especially coming back from near-fatal cancer in practically every part of his body. having lost family memebers to cancer, and nearly losing my mother to it, I have a soft spot in my heart for Lance.
He doesn't, or never will, have the charisma that Pantani had.

I don't know nearly enough about cycling to know it's tactics/customs, but from what you said, it seems like Pantani was in the lead, and Armstrong was trying to pass him to win the stage??

Sergio for me personally its because when I go home and listen to people mention Lance..because they never TALK about him but mention him in passing (back home) like "hey Armstrong won the Tour de "FR-EA-NSH" again...USA USA!" It makes me want to choke someone...unfortunately most people back home have this arrogance that we can dominate any sport and show those "Europeans"...Lance is creating this fairy tale that he is a natural wonder winning all these tours...meanwhile people don't realize he prepares for the Race the whole season.
yes his story is inspirational but so was and maybe even more so was Dan Jansen but he handled his victories with a bit more OOMPH (!) and tact ... so was Saku Koivu's story inspirational but he said "hey its over ... lets go on"... Lance is just dragging us through the mud and more importantly people back home don't really give two "sh*ts" or rather KNOW two sh*ts except the version he tells..I won...the Euros lost...WE are the greatest...Thats what IRKS about Lance.

Basically Lance was right behind Marco in the pack and at the end of the race let Marco win because he said "poor guy worked hard and deserved a break" Pantani went ballistic..its kind of saying "your not going to win unless I let you win"...However, Paul could probably offer more insight...this was followed by jabs on each side "I don't need your gifts"..your just an Elefantino ... etc.

Bit complicated for this time of night.
An example of how things are done.

Tricky launches his attack along way from home, he rips the peloton to shreds... only one man can catch him... Jan Ullrich
Tricky and jan work hard togeather with tricky doing the most of the work.
As the end approaches its clear to all that on this day jan wins the tour.
Jan follows the unwritten rule that as he will win the tour (or take the jersey, dooesnt matter) today and tricky did the work, he will not contest the victory.
As the line approaches jan and tricky sprint for the line... Jan with the utmost respect makes it look like a race but he knows hes stronger as hes been wheel hugging for a while so he eases off jus enough for tricky to win.
All done in away so as the unknowing wouldnt realise what had gone on and neither man would ever mention it.
Compare that to lance on ventoux. (and the bragging after)
There are many unwritten rules in cycling.. the riders must follow.. it is a sign of respect for the sport and your fellow members of the peloton

Yeah, but Nick, you know that Cycling isn't big here at all. Besides, very few people realize that its a TEAM sport, and even fewer people have heard of Tyler Hamilton, who could be the next great American cyclist. And I could have sworn that Lemond was criticizing Lance just last year. I don't remember about what, but Greg came off like an arrogant ass and sour grapes, at least in the eyes of the journalists.
Speaking of which, Jim Rome happens to be one of the biggest Lance Armstrong supporters in this country.

Zulle drops six and a half minutes to lance.
2 weeks later the tour finnishes... lance wins by six and a half minutes from zulle
Once Lance retires he may well go down in the history books but he will never be remembered as one of the greats.... or with any real fondness from the real cycling fans

I think it is great that we can have this thread as a tribute to one the world's finest athletes. In the USA, I find it difficult to get much information, other than there is an investigation into the death. The media hardly touches anything that happens outside our borders, so thank you all for the information you post here.
