Nope....
Pac 10 is not that good, and until Kentucky beat The Ville, the Big East had won the last 6 meetings with the SEC.
That's kind of facetious to say man. I'm a Big East fan and even I know we haven't proved our mettle as a power conference, yet. Sure we've had a few decent wins, South Florida over Auburn and Cinci beating a supposedly decent Oregon State team, but it's still early and Auburn and OSU aren't looking good. Bottom line, the Big East is good but not the best. Here's the break down:
SEC (1-1) = W (Auburn), L(Kentucky)
PAC 10 (1-1) = W(Oregon State), L(Washington)
Big Ten (0-2) = L(MSU), L(Iowa)
ACC (3-0)* = W(Maryland), W(Duke), W(UNC)
C USA (3-0) = 2W(Marshall), W(ECU)
MAC (3-0) = 3W(Who Cares U)
Sun Belt (1-0) = W(MTSU)
Independants (1-0) = W(Navy)
1AA (6-0) = 6W(who cares)
* Fuck the ACC, that's what they get.
I think the statistics speak for themselves. Take a look at the head to head results so far. We can obviously state that we are better than the C-USA, MAC, Sun Belt, 1AA schools, and the Naval Academy. As for the power conferences, we are definitely better than the ACC. The Big East is even with the likes of SEC and PAC 10 and 0-2 against the Big Ten even though the losses were for 'Cuse and Pitt, that doesn't say much for the top to bottom quality of the league. All said the Big East has only proved themselves the third or fourth best conference in the nation based on head to head and not to mention we haven't played anyone from the Big 12. Add in the 5 ranked teams we have and that bumps us up to about 3rd.
Our best wins so far are against Auburn and Oregon State, both of which are turning out to be quite weak sides. Our worst losses were against Kentucky and Syracuse, and they they were bad losses. The worst thing about the Big East is that arguably the worst team in the conference (the 'Cuse) has played the most difficult schedule. True some of our teams have strong out of conference games coming up, such as WVU v. Miss State, but unfortunately Miss. State is well Miss State. I know they beat Auburn but, Auburn is looking just a shade better than Notre Dame right now. So pray Miss. State gets eight wins.
There are a few things we as a conference can do to remedy our reputation of weak scheduling. We could convince Notre Dame to fully become a member and hope that a yearly conference match against touchdown Jesus shuts the critics up, which isn't likely to happen. Realisticly we need to start playing stronger teams at the beginning of the year and stop playing 1-AA schools entirely. I'm not saying we should run to LSU or Oklahoma for the second game of the year like those ACC idiots, but playing a few mid level SEC or Big Ten squads would definitely help. It used to be that we could count on playing Miami, Va Tech and BC in conference play to boost our schedule but we know longer have that luxury. We need to play stern out of conference competition year in and year out to prove that we are a top league.
With than said, I firmly believe WVU is a top five team and have as good a chance as any other team to beat those ranked ahead of us. Our offense is one of the most dangerous in the country and our defense is one of the most underrated. But the truth is, unless we get serious help, it is very unlikely we will end up in the National Championship even if we go undefeated(Which I have no doubt of). There is always hope considering Florida, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas, Cal and USC all play against each other. (You know what I mean.) With that I leave you with a realistic look at the Big East Conference.
