Who should I gloryhunt for in this World Cup? Well, my dad has ancestry in Germany and Holland, so perhaps I will support them. My mom has ancestry in Germany and Poland, however Poland is not as good as my own country, so there is no point in supporting them. I guess I'll be a fan of Germany because my great great great grandfather grew up in the region and I have a supposed German name.

:rolleyes2
There's no gloryhunting in that. They all stink :D

I don't see a point in buying Gerrard when you already have Kaka filling his favored position. Steven could, however, take over for Seedorf or Ancelotti could opt to switch tactics following the failures this season.

But if I was you I would be looking for some help on the defensive before searching for another midfielder..

Yes, Germany, then you can be the American Douche Bag in Dusseldorf.

Support whomever the fuck you please. Nobody cares who you support except you. And you should not care who anyone else supports. If it makes you happy to see Brazil win, then go for it. I don't give a fuck, fucktard. USA might not be an oven, but it is your home.

Considering I support the country that perhaps has the least supporters per capita of any respective nation, I think I should care who my compatriots support. Look, I have no problem with you supporting Italy because that is who you grew up with. I have no problem with Nick supporting Italy in the same fashion either as his world was essentially all Italian during his youth. However, I do have a problem with my compatriots supporting another country when they have no relation to it whatsoever, as in the case with people supporting England just because they speak English (yes, I know a couple people who do that).

Why do I care? Because as opposed to 99% of people in this world I actually care about improving this country's soccer and building it to become a force in the world of football. The sport of soccer survives because of two primary reasons: supporters and money. Without one of those two key elements the sport would be nothing more than a mere fad in today's world. In the United States we have the money, but we do not have the supporters. For soccer to become big in this country, we absolutely need the fans and we need kids who are interested in the sport to dream of playing for the US in a World Cup, like the boys of any other nation of this world. If this country is filled with people supporting sides from England to Antarctica, we will never become a world power in world football.

Of course we will never be a Brazil or Italy, however I simply hope for the best. And considering this, I personally think I should care who people in this country support. I mean, I'm simply supporting my own country here..

Well, they can start by calling it Football and not soccer  . Secondly, I don't see how supporting a team other than the US is going to be bad for football to gain popularity. In fact, having a random yank who support a team at all is pretty damn amazing. As you know there are people here who say, "Soccer? Oh I never really got into that...don't understand the game". IQ levels must be really high :shifty:

Similarly, one could argue why support club teams outside the MLS? Same thing, imo.

There is some difference, Ze T. Nobody bats at an eye at you for supporting a foreign club, because MLS really is 4th division stuff. However, the USA team deserves support, as they have worked their asses off in an apathetic climate and have formed a really talented team and pool of players. I just can't be assed to support them given that I can name maybe 3 guys in the side and have never felt American, though it is a sweel place to reside. :p

This is another thing I just don't understand. Who friggin cares what the sport is called? Soccer takes the name of football, fussball, voetball, calcio etc anyway, so what is the problem with calling it soccer? In arabic, what is the word for soccer? I'm sure many people could make a stink about that one as well, but who cares?

It's not the same thing at all, especially when our best players play in Europe. Players such as Beasley need to play across the pond because that is where they will find the best competiton, so you cannot blame them for leaving the MLS.

Well, senhor, I don't speak Arabic so I wouldn't know what it's called, but I bet it's called football because that is the imported word everywhere, save Italy and the US as far as I know.

That wasn't my point. My point is that American fans such as you, should support your own league. With all this money floating around in this country, the MLS could become a top league in the world if someone would spark an interest. The arab leagues, as far as I know, are ahead in this department. Europe have maffiosi's and abramovich's, the Middle East has Sheiks, the US needs something in on that track I guess :p

I agree, but the United States is like a huge orgy of people from all over the world, there is no one who's really "American". I think because most of fans in the US are young; most are probably 2nd generation Americans of other origin, so I can understand why they wouldn't support the United States.

I do support my own league. In fact I was on the brink of going to a DC United match tonight, however Burke decided he did not want to go. When DC United is on I always watch the game and of course I follow the MLS and attend matches different matches. But this is still not the same thing as International football. Club vs. country here, and country in this matter is much more important.

And that's exactly why the MLS will never be bigger than what it already is in comparison to the 4 major sports in the US.

I'm not sure if you're old enough to remember the North American Soccer Leage, or NASL, as it was called. This league truly had a chance to become the 3rd most popular sport in the US back in the late 70's. Before the advent of sports television as we know it, baseball was far and away the most popular sport, with football (NFL) a distant second. Basketball was unbearable to watch during this time, before Magic Johnson and Larry Bird came into the league, and hockey was as it is now, the 4th major sport.

During this time, the NASL, most notably the New York Cosmos, started bringing in top flight talent from around the world (Beckenbauer, Chinaglia, coaxing Pele out of retirement, nearly missing out on George Best), to bring nationwide interest to the sport.

    And it worked.

    Until.......................................

Other teams who did not have the financial backing such as the Cosmos did back then (I believe Universal Entertainment owned them), started spending well beyond their means in order to procure players of equal caliber. This led the league into financial ruin.

Now, the MLS is slowly starting to gain more popularity as the years go on, as young homegrown players who are starting to feature for the National team are getting more exposure (BTW, I was at the US-Latvia match on Sunday, and there was about 85% capacity. Excellent Crowd, especially for a friendly). But I can see the road ahead, and if New York Red Bull starts throwing around 10 year, 120 million dollar contracts (Yes, you read that correctly) at the likes of Ronaldo, there are going to be serious problems in the forseeable future.

Well, good, next step, get slots for football on ESPN :p Another key problem is that football will never get it's share of broadcasting because it has to be comercial free (Thank you God!), and we all know American TV can not live without comercials :disagree:

But this is still not the same thing as International football. Club vs. country here, and country in this matter is much more important.
Agreed, but refer to my post to Pado.
