Milan deny match-fixing claims after allegations
ROME, May 25 (Reuters) - AC Milan denied on Thursday any wrongdoing after a newspaper published phone taps which suggested the club had tried to influence the appointment of referees for their matches.
The phone taps were part of a probe into alleged match-fixing which has so far centred on Serie A champions Juventus but has sent shock waves through the Italian game.
Milan's lawyer said in a statement the phone taps had been "wrongly interpreted".
According to one of the transcripts published by Corriere della Sera daily, Leonardo Meani, a member of AC Milan's management, spoke to the official assigning linesmen in April 2005, complaining about a linesman after Milan lost to Siena.
In the phone call he warned the official to "be careful", adding that AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani, who is also the Football League president, was "furious".
A separate phone tap shows Meani speaking with another football federation official about refereeing appointments.
In a statement, Milan lawyer Leandro Cantamessa said: "I have said and have repeated ad nauseam that Milan have nothing to do with this case."

Yes, Rui Costa has left but it was not shocking or bitter...he helped the team a great deal in the 2003 CL run and provided great memories until Kaka arrived..he then became our biggest asset on the bench and added incredible depth. He was all class and a true gent...good luck to him.
Thus far we have lost Stam, Rui Costa and Shevchenko. Stam left because his wife preferred Veal a la Rotterdam over Veal a la Milanesse...

Milan asked Shevchenko to explain his decision to the Milan fans..here is his letter.
Yesterday was a truly difficult day for me and I thought long and hard before coming to this decision. It was a troubled choice for me, but I feel the time has come to think about the future of my family and my children, who are the most important things in my life. A few days ago, I explained my reasons to Silvio Berlusconi, who is a very special person for me, as he is the Godfather to my son. He listened and understood. ‘Do what is best for you,’ he told me. For this, and for all the things he has done for me and my family, I will be eternally grateful. I also thank the club and Adriano Galliani, who did everything possible, and more, to keep me here. Above all, I want to speak to the fans and ask them to accept my choice. I have read your messages this week and many of them brought a tear to my eye. I also understand your anger and disappointment, but I request that you accept my decision as a man. What you have given me over these years has been unique and you always made me feel at home. To stand in the Curva with you was one of the strongest emotions I have ever experienced in my life. You have a piece of my heart and will be there always.'
