
What I'm trying to say is that it seems logical to me not to insert punctuation into a quote if it's not part of the original quote.
The last line on the page that you sent me reads:
"Dave is outside," Mike whispered. "He is my best friend."
It doesn't make a great deal of difference to me, but
* Dave is outside,
is an incorrect sentence, because sentences should end with a period.
So by quoting "Dave is outside," it looks like the original speaker said something more than that i.e. "Dave is outside, because his dad told him to go outside"
when in fact "Dave is outside." was a complete sentence in the original quote.
