Without that though would it have ever taken off in the first place? That was the attraction, no one would have wanted to follow the NASL league if it didnt have those stars.
In my opinion, a balance of foreign players blended in with American talent could have survived, even thrived, had it been done the right way.
However, with no true salary structure in place, this allowed a handful of teams, most notably the New York Cosmos, to basically monopolize all the foreign talent, and with no strong union or commisioner to step in, the other owners were basically forced to try and match what the Cosmos were spending, and therefore, bankrupted the league.
Granted, yes, the influx of foreign stars did indeed help to kickstart the league, as it has done with the MLS. But where the NASL failed, the MLS learned from its predecessor's mistakes, and is tarting to become quite a viable product.
